i got a killer deal on a 42'' red cast hi-lift (20.00/ yardsale. went to home depot and fabed up a really nice mout, relized there is nowhere to use the thing on a kj  . so now what? is there any real reason to have one? i thought i had seen a couple of discussions on hi-lifts on this forum before, but why if you cant use them. or can you?

You'll need boulder bars ( or some other rock slider ) or a custom front/rear bumper to use the lift w/the hi-lift.

boulder bars or similar sliders can be found for a few hundred bucks and, if you plan on doing any sort of off roading, should really be mandatory equipment for your vehicle

Hi lift sells hooks that grab the wheel spokes.

yeah i've seen that. how dose it work if the wheel your lifting is the one thats flat, carry a jack mount?

ok first off carrying a hi-lift is never a bad idea even if you can't use it. I've carried a good tow rope and a good set of jumper cables ever since i got my first truck. And to this day I've never had to use either for myself or my rigs, but they always seem to come in handy for someone else :D

Plus a high lift can be rigged up as a winch in a pinch (love the rhyme) so carry a good rope that wont stretch much and it still may come in handy.

*EDIT
If you have front or rear hitch you may be able to stick the hi-lift in the hitch and jack away, though i imagine you may need to remove the spare tire to get to it.

Part of having an off-road vehicle is equipping it with not only skids and recovery points but places for your jack to work. My ARB bumper has a slot for the Hi Lift and I use the tire hooks along the edge of my RL rear bumper.

Rock sliders are pretty automatic for off-road vehicles as well and make a good point.

Takes money to look money.

You can jack using your hitch receiver, but without rockrails, there is no where else to lift.

Go buy the wheel adapter. To use the wheel adapter you would also need to carry a jack stand.

- Jack up using the wheel adapter
- Put the jack stand in place
- Lower to the jack stand.

Yeah, I was going to add that welding 4 mounting points to the frame side rails would be inexpensive. I like what you did there.

I have a hi-lift but to be honest have not found it to be to useful in the mud. It slips out on uneven ground. Even with the hi-lift base i have found it to be useless in mud. But the winch is king.

yeah, i've looked and the products look great. i really woud like to get the ones that have the extra tubeing for more protection/steprails. rusty's, rocklizard and rocky-road seem to be the only ones i can find in this style and rust'y seem to be about $50 cheaper. i'm not sure why, maybe the others are stronger?

I was looking on rusty's site and did not see anything for a kj with 'steprails'. I did find this, but that looks like an inferior design to rocklizard or even RRO.

I saw that but they don't tell you how much it is. Did you ask them for a price?
