What size drop hitch did people use to center the shacles in the factory cut outs on an 05 sport. Looks like 3 1/2"?

that should be right

05 uses same tow hooks as the other models

i used 3 1/4 drop CII but a 3 1/2 would have fit slightly better

Post subject:  class II strong enough?

Just a quick question before I buy. The strongest Class II drop hitches I can find are 3,500lb. Is this too weak, or is that rating only because class II hitches only rate that much? The class III hitches I see rate for 5000 or even 7500 lbs.

that's typical as a Class II

using them as a front recovery point you'd be putting pressure on them in a different rated manner than if you were towing something

they're able to take quite a bit more stress being pulled length wise than they are when used as a 'tongue weight' manner as in towing

i snatched on mine harder than a 4x4 would typically be able to snatch with a super 460 farmall and they didn't budge but i did alter the mounting to use 3 bolts instead of 2 to strengthen it's shock load capabilities

As lomg as you can hook to both of them you will end up with 7000 lbs of rating (3500 x 2).

Food for thought.

just don't make the mistake of hooking to both of them and then hooking to a single point on the other vehicle

the 3500 is rather irrelevant for the use as a front recovery point since it's being stressed in a completely different manner so, no it's not 3500x2

if mounted correctly and with the correct hardware, pulling in a mostly level straight line, more than likely your front cross member behind the fascia will rip out before you break the hitch portion which of course is assuming someone is pulling YOU

it's not advised to pull anyone in reverse using these front recovery points or any other front recovery point for obvious aluminum reasons
