Is it normal for the steering wheel to go back and forth when going down bumpy gravel roads? Is this road feel or bad rack. I have jacked up the front and pushed and pulled. I found nothing loose? It tracks straight on the pavement and no jerky steering at all. almost no steering wheel play .Thanks.

I don't go on gravel, but mine tracks straight on pavement as well, but when I hit bumps like the start or end of some bridges...it bops it to one side or the other. It may always be the same way but I haven't really payed attention. All I know is bumps will make my steering jerk.

actually it's more likely to be the steering rack or associated what-nots

mine did it before and after rebuilding the suspension

Road feel. I have lived on gravel roads all my life and every one of my cars have done it. In general, the lower profile the tire, the more the steering wheel will shake is one of my observations. My lowered Jetta on 17s shook horribly. The Jeep isn't so bad.

My driveway is bumpy with washouts. my wifes dodge caliber steering wheel does not seem to move that bad. but my jeep moves pretty good. I am almost at 100,000 miles so I may just start replacing stuff. But as of yet I cannot get any movement from any components when jacked up. On the highway it tracks straight as a arrow. My wifes caliber doesn't have a heavy bumper and winch on it either?
