Did anybody changed those awful flimsy plugs on the transfer case with real ex plugs and copper washer seal? I remember on my YJ, the plugs were more solid than on the liberty. By any chance, could you tell me where I could find these hex plugs or the part numbers? That would be really appreciated since those plugs have a tendency to stick and that 10mm allen is just going to strip.

Are you guys tired of stripping out the transfer case plugs, I used two NAPA part number #704-1048 plugs. They come with 3/4 bolt ends. They fit both the fill plug and drain plug holes. They come with gaskets and work great.

Are you sure it's M22 and not 12?

I guess we'll know quite soon, those drain plugs from NAPA are M22x1.5 and I should get them on Friday. According to everybody on the web, those plugs fit like a glove on the transfer case.

Just to let you know that the plug comes with fiber gasket (not that great) and I found some 22mm copper gasket at NAPA. the p/n is 704-1364. Looks easy but nobody seems to have 22mm gasket in stock. I had to find the p/n myself through the web.

Those 10mm allen plugs SUCK!! I have replaced most of mine with the 32mm hex bolts from junked older Tcases. When I did the SYE on one of my XJs 231s I could drain the oil, but not get the fill plug out!! Of course, I didn't realize that the fill plug wouldn't budge until after everything else was all bolted up!! So, I had to take out the speedo gear and pour the oil in that way, very very very slowly, because there isn't much clearance between the case and the pump. I hate whomever thought the 10mm allen plugs were a good idea!!

Oh yeah, and it's definitely 22mm (I've had the 231 apart enough times to know that). Try finding the good plugs in the junkyard, or if you know anyone who has blown up a 231 out of an older jeep. Not too many bad 231s around though, they tend to last. Pretty good Tcase.

Well, doo doo does happen!! Some people just get unlucky sometimes, but for the most part the 231s hold up to years and years and years of hard use, no problem. I know people that have modified them and doubled the Transfer case creating a 231/dana 300 doubler....so yeah, they're pretty good cases. But even Dana 60 axles break sometimes!!

There are a lot worse transfer cases out there!! Be happy you have a maunal shift Tcase and a new process/new venture one at that!!

Just a foot note for anyone with a stuck/stripped plug; get a large nut that leaves most of the plug head exposed through it's center. Weld it on through center hole. While hot, turn the POS out and replace with new one. If you don't have welding capability, I'll bet about any local muffler shop has somebody more than qualified.
