| Post subject: | Help With Mopar Skid Install |
My brother has a 2006 Liberty Sport. It has the offroad package so it came from the factory with full Mopar skids, tow hooks and a couple of other factory items. He has graciously decided to give me the skids and the tow hooks for use on my 2005 Liberty Limited. He never off roads, but I do. He does a lot of traveling as he is in college in another state, so he could use the weight loss for better mileage anyway since he will never use them. My problem is that I need to know what I need to install these on mine. I am pretty sure that all I need is the nutzerks (I think that is what they are called), but I'm not sure what I need to install the nutzerks I need six of these (his)...
to go into these (mine)...
This is a link to the Mopar install guide. http://site.justforjeeps.com/guide/82209455.pdf I know that I need 6xB, and I am pretty sure I only need 1xA. Does anyone have the part numbers of what I need? I found this part number in another thread... 6505294AA. However, I also read that the two for the trans are different than the ones for the T-Case. If anyone has the parts numbers(s), please let me know. Also, do I just need one type of screw to install them? Can I get that at the dealer also? Part number for that also? This is what I have...
The engine and gas tank skids aren't pictures. They are all in good shape, just need to be cleaned. Thanks! |

I lucked out and my Ace Hardware store carries Nutzerts. If you have one around your area, you might want to check there. Otherwise check your local stealership. |

Part A is the nutzert installation tool. The only part number I can find on the one I have is 100aa184 AVK industrial products. That is the tool just for jeeps sent me when i bought mine. And all the bolts are the same size. |

Go here and look down the list for the skids your installing and you should find the instructions for them. It should have a 'parts list' and hopefully the part numbers you need. http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=10813 |

front engine skid takes bolts in the front and you can drill through the cross member at the rear as well and bolt on, same way with the tranny skid, drill and bolt on, hold better as well, transfer case skid you almost need two nut zerts for the side |

I will check them out. I'm sure they will be quite a bit cheaper than the dealer and the tool would most likely be there also.kskj wrote: Part A is the nutzert installation tool. I'll give that number a shot and see if they have it. 501 wrote: Go here and look down the list for the skids your installing and you should find the instructions for them. I'm sure that will help me show the dealer what I need if it comes down to that.http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=10813 tommudd wrote: front engine skid takes bolts in the front and you can drill through the cross member at the rear as well and bolt on, same way with the tranny skid, drill and bolt on, hold better as well, transfer case skid you almost need two nut zerts for the side It seemed that the holes for the engine skid are already there. Also, the holes for the other skids are there just waiting for the nutzerts. I guess if I were installing a beefier skid, I would drill. But seeing as I am installing an OEM part, I might as well just install it how it it is meant to be installed. Plus, I hate drilling thorugh metal.
Thanks for the responses. |

I found the part numbers I was looking for. The "RIVET" part number is 6505 294AA and the "TOOL, Rivnut" part number is 5013 886AA for those that are or might be looking for them in the future. Thanks for all the help. |

Drilling through the cross members will be better in the long run if you're planning on using the skids. I took some hard hits on the trans skid and the nutzerts popped out - I have everything bolted in place now |

The "RIVETS" are $3.95 each and the "Tool, Rivnut" has been discontinued. callaway wrote: Drilling through the cross members will be better in the long run if you're planning on using the skids.
I took some hard hits on the trans skid and the nutzerts popped out - I have everything bolted in place now I may be going that route. When you talk about drilling into the cross member, what are you putting into the hole to thread the bolt through? |

Drill a hole through both walls of the cross member, then just use a bolt/washer/nylock combo |

not to jack this thread, I have the same problem but just with my transfer case skid. I'm thinking just go the nutzert route since their mopar skids, but what exactly do I walk into Ace and ask for? I'm sure they don't understand mopar part numbers, so is there a specific size nutzert I need? |

the transfer case skid can be bolted on as well, two in the cross member and you can get one into the frame through an exsisting hole, sort of ahrd but I have done it |

I'm not going to bother with drilling anything right now so I am just going to suck it up and go to the dealer this afternoon. |

Would you do me a favor then? Post back here if the dealer was able to get the parts, and if they were how much it cost? Tom I think I understand what your saying I'll have to crawl under and see what size, length bolts I need, but I'm sure I've got a few in my junk drawer in the basement. If not, those I'm Sure my local Ace will have. |

I asked around about these "Nutzerts" and noone knew what the heck I was talkin about. One guy was a journeyman deisel mechanic for 11 yrs and the other has an extensive knowledge of auto mechanics. Sometimes I feel like an idiot goin around lookin for odds and ins that I need for this jeep. So far, my skids are still sittin under my bed cause I didnt know what I needed to put them on without havin to turn the kj into swiss cheese. I know where the guys are comin from that dont wanna be drillin holes all over. |

| Post subject: | Nutzerts, RivNuts, threaded rivets |
Nutzerts and RivNuts are the brand names for threaded rivets. Harbor Freight has a small, cheap one. Grainger and McMaster will have the size you need if you can't find them at the local ACE hardware. And you don't need the riveter to install them but it makes it much easier. Otherwise you'll need a long bolt, nut and washer. Install the nut on the bolt, tighten to the head, install the washer, then the threaded rivet, place in the hole, hold the bolt head in place and loosen the nut. It will tighted down on the threaded rivet in the hole and set the rivet. Not as pretty as the riveter but will work in a pinch. |

The dealer is able to get the rivet nuts and they were $4.99 a piece at my local dealer. However, I talked him down to $3.95 a piece. I ordered six of them and with tax, that came to around $25. Tom I think I understand what your saying I'll have to crawl under and see what size, length bolts I need, but I'm sure I've got a few in my junk drawer in the basement. If not, those I'm Sure my local Ace will have. They supposedly are not able to get the "tool" anymore. So, I made one with $1.25 worth of material. People knew what they were, but nobody around my area carries them. It was either buy on the internet, pay shipping and maybe get the wrong thing or buy from the dealer. If they fall out later, I will bolt them on. But for right now, I am going OEM.
Also in that picture, you can see the awesome "tool" that Jeep sent out for them before they discontinued it. |
