I think what your seeing is normal for trans with bunch of miles and no regular cleaning,at least mine looks about the same.I go by if no spots under car,no major problem.

I saw that also. Would that have any effect to the sludge he's finding?

you sure? your last 2 pics are of the engine oil pan. Tranny doesnt have a drain plug.

I mean it sure couldnt hurt to change out that fluid anyway

i know. the boot on the drive shaft is new. it was clean about 2 weeks ago. the oil pan isnt leaking but its wet.

is it strange my jeep doesnt have a transmission dipstick?

Is it strange that you don't have a trans dipstick? Nope that is called Daimler-Chrysler cost cutting at its best.

and because some people can't seem to figure out the proper way to check the fluid level and end up overfilling it.

MS5490- It looks like grease on your finger, but if it is a new shaft I sure hope that boot hasn't already gone on you. That would be a lil unusual.. Especially on the front CV most of the times the rear CV goes out on the DS.

2007 was the model year when Chrysler stopped putting the transmission dipstick in KJ's. If your vehicle is MY2002-2006 it should have a transmission dipstick in the tube.

If you don't have the dipstick your tranmssion tube needs to be sealed so moisture and debris doesn't enter the transmission pan.

Go to Sears and get a set of their "bolt-out" to remove the stripped bolt. Works great.

you have a straight drive, there won't be a tube bro ;)

ya have a fill plug, and a drain plug on the manual tranny

the fill plug is where ya check the level, on level surface remove fill plug and either one of two things occur

ya stick ya finger in and touch fluid = good to go

or fluid starts to come out when you remove the plug = good to go slap plug back in

which plug is which is pretty self explanatory

where are said plugs? the oily crap reappeared today. i just want to get it taken care of before sht happens

the drain plug is almost at the bottom and ones about halfway up on the transmission (the ribbed part) not on the bellhousing since nothings behind that but the clutch and what not

im sorry i don't remember which side passenger or driver that they're on but they should be pretty obvious and mostly in line with one another

that black sludge youre finding, where's the highest and farthest forward area you're finding it?

it doesn't look transmission related at all as clean as your tranny is in those pictures

Author:  Ms5490renegade [ Fri Aug 28, 2009 12:25 am ]
Post subject:

the sludge is coming frome the bell of the tranny. its right on the sides. like where the clutch would be

Author:  JeepinJarhead03 [ Fri Aug 28, 2009 12:42 am ]
Post subject:

if its all on one side where a steel line goes to the transmission on the side (its the hydrolic clutch actuator) check the hydrolic resovior and see if it's low if so the leak is at the actuator - pretty much 2 bolts hold it on it's basically a hydrollicly powered push rod

if it's on both sides, check the transmission fluid level at the fill hole

there's a seal on the input shaft that can cause similar sludge to be expelled if it starts to fail

but honestly it looks more of an engine leaked oil sludge but hard to say with a picture of a finger ;)

if you find it foward of the transmission, basically rule the transmission leak out unless you drive backwards down the road alot

Post subject:

ill get a better picture tomorrow. its on both sides of the transmission. it comes and goes. the brake fluid level is good.

Oops - never caught the standard tranny portion in the signature block. Sorry guys.

Only automatic transmissions have the dipstick / tube.
