Post subject:  Washing the Engine

Hi,
I need to clean my engine since it is covered in dirt. A week ago I accidentally found a thread about it and now I cannot re-find it. Yes I tried another search but I never find what I am looking for with these huge forum searches. Can someone please PM me the link or something? Very frustrated. Thanks

Simply Green - spray engine and let it do it's magic. Spray off with water. Would not recommend high pressure though. Soft bristle brush and rags to get the really stubborn areas.
I just cleaned mine in my garage. Simply Green is biodegradable and instead of a hose, I used warm water in a hand pressurized pesticide sprayer. No worries about it being too high of pressure to force itself into delicate areas.

It's a good idea to cover alternator, fusebox, and distributor(if you have one)with plastic grocery bags.
Dont wash a hot engine(WHY?I don't know,just what I've been taught).
And that Simple Green degreaser is awesome.

Cold water on hot things makes those hot things CRACK. That is why you don't spray water on a hot engine. I have seen Coil packs on motors go bad. My Ford F250 V10 is good for that. Hit a good puddle and have a hot engine and Gomer Pyle is saying "surprise surprise" A miss in the engine has popped up.

3X's on the simple green. :D

Not so sure about the water and hot engine idea. We go through glacier cold water splashing up into the engine a few times a year up in the Rockies and no issues. No reason to push the luck when washing the engine though.

Simple Green is awesome, highly recommended. If prefer to rinse the engine down when it's warm(let it sit for 10 minutes after driving) so that the grease/dirt/etc. will come off easier. I have not done this to the Libby yet but on my Integra I just cover the dizzy, get the engine bay wet, spray on the SG and rinse it off. Never had a problem. Just use the "mist" setting on the hose nozzle so there isn't a risk of high water pressure damage.

Are you guys diluting your Simple Green or using it in it’s concentrated form? I just bought a spray bottle a few weeks ago and noticed that it’s “concentrated.”

I didn't dilute it when I cleaned mine but I'm sure it would work either way. It works great.
