Post subject:  Wheel bearing problems..

Ok, so I had just recently swapped out my rack and pinion and had taken my jeep into the alignment shop. The tech from the shop says it sounds like my passanger side wheel bearing is going bad. So, what I am hearing is kind of a "roaring" sound coming from the passanger side. When I went to napa to see what this part would cost me, I found out that it is the whole hub assembly I have to replace. But I was told that the hub assembly usually lasts a REALLY long time without need of repair. Has anyone else had to replace wheel bearings on your liberty and is there an easier way than replacing the whole hub assembly?

bigger tires = quicker wear. gotta pay to play. I was in the same boat. boats are fun.

Yeah pretty much that bearing and hub assembly are all one, and it would be easier to change out the whole hub than just a beareing. You can get them for varying prices and varying opinions on here. I got the "economy" mopar version through the dealership and it has worked well. They don't offer that up front. You have to ask for it. They usually don't stock it either.

All in all, get a new wheel hub assembly. It will cost you a few bucks, cant remember the price, but is really simple to replace, you will just need a special socket to replace (can't remember that either). Can look in the am....too many beers on football sunday. lucky i can type rith now!

The bearing/s for the hub may be able to be presses out of the hub, but as far as time and cost are concerned, just get the hub and be done with it for another 100 to 150 k

What is this "economy" mopar hub you speak of? Are ya tellin me that this option would be cheaper for me? I am so tired of dealin with all the front end work of this liberty... Doesnt look like there is any end in site either. Got sounds and vibrations comin from the driver side and I imagine the tires could use a good rotating and balancing. Hopefully that helps somewhat. I am in the learning process, so I get to use half my time and money doin it wrong!!! YAY!

Are you sure its the wheel bearing and not the CVs. When they start to go they also have a slight roaring like sound sometimes.

I am honestly not sure. I replaced the R&P on my own and have done all my own work thus far(with everyone from LOSTs help). These problems started after I came back from the last trail run and my steering wheel was crooked. I needed to change out my rack before hand and after the trail, I thought I had bent an inner tie-rod. So, I changed the rack and got an alingnment. After I picked up the truck from the alignment shop, it started havin the problems. I know its hard to diagose the issues thru the computer, but I take it all into consideration. I have never done any work on cv's before, but I have had to remove hubs on an olde GMC Sierra I had, I may be able to handle that on my own   . IDK guys, any help is great at this point.

I can't remember what the exact name for them is. But I called the dealership and they told me $2?? for the hub, then I said it was too much so they said they had another part that was about $150ish if I recall. I guess just ask. Like I said, they don't offer it up right away. The hub is soooooooo simple to replace. 20 minute job at most with jacking and tire removal. The socket you will need is an E14, probably the only time you will need it. got mine at the local parts store.

Unfortunately with the KJ front end set up we are looking at lots of front end issues when lifted. I'm dealing with the same. Its a real PITA, but love the KJ for its road and off-road capability.

I dont think I been able to experience the KJs "great" off-road capability yet since I have been still putzin around with my olde OPEN differentials. If I could ever tie up all the loose ends with this front end, maybe I can get around to startin on custom bumpers, diffs, rack, SOMETHING FUN!! Jeesh...

I would replace both side wheel hubs and be done with it. I just replaced the front wheel hubs on my kj. I think it was cheaper than replacing just the bearings. It is also easier. If you want to know how to do it take a look at this video. It is not hard at all.

I wasnt thinkin it was gonna be too hard at all. I was more worried about the cost and the time.. I did in fact rotate and balance the tires today and completely got rid of the issues I was havin on the driver side. I still want to get a 2nd opinion on the wheel bearing on the pass side so I am not wastin my time and money. Cant wait till I get my 265/75 16s and deal with all the issues with those! woohoo

Just make sure you know for sure its the wheel bearing, as TOMMUD stated the cv's make the same noise when they start to go. just trying to save you $$$$$$$

Jack the wheel up, put one hand on the top of the tire, the other on the bottom, and try to rock the tire pulling with one hand and pushing with the other feeling for play. Repeat holding left and right side. Do the same for the other wheel and compare. Usually you can feel play in the suspect bearing from the top and bottom position. Can also help in balljoint/tie rod end diagnosis. Just a suggestion.

Good way to check play in the suspension, but just remember that most wheel bearing issues will be more prenounced with a load on it. When the vehicle is raised the load is released and diagnose would be inacurate.

BOTH front wheel bearings are shot on mine at 40k miles. Mine should be arriving from rockauto.com tomorrow.

I got them for $347 (both) overnight shipping. They would have been $327 with standard shipping.

Also - I can't hear anything with the KJ on jackstands. It's got to be when load is on it. No play in them or anything.

My issue is I don't know how to get the wheel speed sensor out. I made a post on it.

Is that price for both of the front hub assemblies?? I would imagine it would have to be... Also, I couldnt feel any play with the jeep front end off the ground. All I know is that when I am goind very slow I can hear the "roaring" sound from the passenger side. It doesnt seem to be so bad, but I worry cause I know that it shouldnt be making any sound in the fist place..

Yes - Rockauto.com, you want TIMKEN HA599455L or TIMKEN HA599455R for the front. One was $158 and one was $160. Mine came with ABS sensors. You probably won't find them any cheaper. I couldn't find any play either. My driver's side was bad, but my passenger side was totally shot. After I took it off and spun it you could tell.
