Post subject:  rack bushings worn out........

i just has an alignment done and they said that when they hit the brakes as they were pulling it into the alignment rack the wheels dipped in, in a weird way. so they checked it out and said that the rack bushings were shot and that rubber was coming out the top of one of them. Bushings are 80 bucks for the 2 but labor is 600, so anyone want to let me know how difficult it is for me to do it myself, cause there is no way i am gonna pay them 700 to do it. my jeep only has 50,000 miles on it so it is technically covered under warranty but i've got a feeling that they dealer is gonna say that lifting it voided the warranty for the suspension and steering, what do you guys think, thanks alot

I installed a couple rubber insulators in a steering rack on a LOST member's 04 KJ this past summer. I unbolted the two large bolts to the frame, then unbolted the steering shaft, and disconected the outter tie rods from the knuckles. I managed to lift the rack up and used a prybar or screwdriver with a hammer knocked out the old bushings from the top side of the steering rack. I lubed up the new bushings with some diletric grese then installed them, and reinstalled the rack!! if you can change a set of brake pads, you can do this in a afternoon !!!

Dont forget to count the threads on the outer tie rod ends to keep the alignment as close as possible. It was a little messy when I changed my rack, so be aware that it can get messy. Moving the steering rack around causes all the fluid left in the rack to come out. At least, it was a mess when I did mine   .

i took a look at it closer in the daylight this morning and the rack moved a little bit when my dad was turning the steering wheel, but im not too terribly worried about it yet, there is no play in my steering whatsoever and no shimmys or shakes, so when i notice one of those things i'll pop in some new bushings, i read on a different forumn that you can put some oversized washers on and torque it back down, so we'll see what happens. I'm heading back to north dakota for leave next saturday so we'll see if they loosen up at all. thanks for the input

If you remove the outter tierods from the knuckles you don't need to count any threads or align in most cases. Remove the 19 or 21mm nut and use a pickle fork and a hammer and pop the tierod off !!!!
