Post subject:  Fog Light Mod?

Is there a Mod out there to get your fog lights to stay on with your high beams?

Thanks

easy, find the sense wire that is tied into the high beam circuit that goes dead when you hit the brights using a multimeter, trace it to its relay, remove relay, rewire. etc.

or, just rewire straight to the switch

I would like this for off road,
but, it may be illegal in your state to have the highs come on with the fogs. You can possibly fail an inspection.

I do know it is illegal in California.

well, seeing as it is technically illegal to drive with your high beams on anyway...

it probably doesn't matter

I'm not a lawyer, and the person who told you you could not legally operate your motor vehicle in the usa with your high beams on, is also not a lawyer.

Maby in your backwards county or something but not the rest of us.

Heck here's ohio code for lighting.

http://codes.ohio.gov/oac/4501-15

They require that you have a HIGH BEAM headlamp

section c para one,

(1) There shall be an uppermost distribution of light, or composite beam, so aimed and of such intensity as to reveal persons and vehicles at a distance of at least three hundred fifty feet ahead for all conditions of loading.

HMM?

oh yea, and that's why I've been cited for driving with high beams on with oncoming traffic, thanks

I understand it is mandatory to have a High-Beam, I read the entire revised code for lighting.

that being said, high beams are to be used only in driving conditions where lighting is unfavorable for revealing objects at a distance that would otherwise cause them to be obscured by darkness.

if you cause glare over a certain height to oncoming drivers, you are breaking the law by creating unsafe driving conditions.

*EDIT* and cited

I never said that intentionally disrupting a motor vehicle operators vision by operating your high beams into oncoming traffic was legal.

If there were a person that used their high beams as i was approaching them, and did not turn them off in a timely fashion, I would hope a officer were there to cite them. What's next? you forgot to turn the steering wheel away from the pedestrian? you forgot to stop at the red light? it's all the same class of action.

I, and may other people, seem to be able to not have this problem.

Anyway, my point is that people should be aware of the laws in their states regarding the legality of their actions, such as defeating safety equipment, such as the fog light and high beam. You will not be surprised by the law enforcement's reaction to your actions if you are aware of the law, not knowing the law is not a valid excuse to break the law, therefore it is to your advantage to know, before you encounter trouble, so that you can take the appropriate precautions before making a decision on a course of action.

Maybe you don't care if you fail an inspection because of your high beam fog light mod, maybe the inspector does not care, but you could, and thus you should know.

Simultaneous fog and high beam operation appears to be illegal in Ohio.
It does not explicitly state it is illegal however it is worded carefully so that a LEO can charge you with a violation and most likely a judge will uphold it, assuming you had the gumption to fight it.

Ohio 4501-15-06 In para A states that;

(A) Fog lamps – Any motor vehicle may be equipped with a maximum of two fog lamps mounted on the front at a height not less than twelve inches nor more than thirty inches above the level surface upon which the vehicle stands and so aimed that when the vehicle is loaded none of the high-intensity portion of the light to the left of the center of the vehicle shall at a distance of twenty-five feet ahead project higher than a level of four inches below the level of the center of the lamp from which it comes. Lighted fog lamps meeting the above requirements may be used with lower headlamp beams as specified in paragraph (C)(2) of rule 4501-15-01 of the Administrative Code.

I am not perpetuating an argument, but under that code, and the ohio revised code, the only real specification for when the lights are on is that when the lights are on, they MUST be wired in a way that also causes the taillamp to be lit as well, ie. you cant have just your fogs/driving lights on.

I would also like to clear something up for the record, I was not intentionally using my high beams towards oncoming traffic.

I was traveling down a two-lane country highway late at night and passed a police cruiser which was sitting (read, waiting) on the other side of the road in the opposite direction, while operating my high beams, after which he proceeded to pull onto the roadway, turn around, and then pull me over for creating 'unsafe driving conditions.'

he threatened me with Criminal Negligence while operating a motor vehicle, but upon inquiry as to what I had done that constituted criminal negligence he said, and I quote, "you're just lucky I'm in a good mood"

After receiving my lovely ticket, I requested his badge number, the next day, me and my two friends, who were in the vehicle, went and filed a complaint and got the whole thing thrown out.

thank the stars for passengers
