So today my tcase with a mere 66,000 miles exploded, chain snapped and took just about everything else out. Seems no one at any dealership, or "jeep specialist" at quadratec, 4wheel parts, 4wdh, daveys jeeps other places knows jack about the Liberties/

My Liberty has a 231 I know 231's have been used for years and there are slight differances in many, my question is what years should be identical to mine.

One from a any year of KJ.Any other 231 will need other driveline modifications.

Wow, I'm surprised a T-case exploded on a 2007 Liberty. What were you doing? driving on pavement in 4WD?

Have you considered an upgrade to a NV242 Selec-Trac? Then you'd have the option of Full-time or Part-time 4WD.
Myself if I had a second vehicle to drive and some extra cash I'd rebuild the replacement transfer case with beefier parts. Then you would know it's reliable.

If you want more info on transfer case options for a Liberty just use the forum's search feature.
And there's Wikipedia;

No, driving down the road in 2wd. It never see's 4wd on pavement unless it is very slick out, and even in those cases I only use it when its needed.

Nothing suprises me with this thing. I spent more on repairs last year than I did on the payment. But im not looking to go into details AGAIN, there are threads out there about whats gone wrong on it.

It is up forsale if youd like to purchase it.

does the transmission matter? I thought the 45RFE and the 42RLE had different spline counts on the output shaft.

There all 23-spline inputs,the length and output's will vary from Jeep to jeep.

Yes, that is the same 231 (internally) used in hundreds of thousands of Jeeps, Dodges, Chevies, you name it. Seems to be a half-way decent unit without a huge failure rate.

I mis-remembered as I thought that you had a 6-speed.

Nope this uns an auto. Tranny is the only thing I havent had to deal with on this yet, and it should be the bad part with all the towing it does.

I did pick up a case from the boneyard today, Had to get oen with 45,000 on it as the 29k one was sold, but thats still less than my lib has.

Gonna put it in tommorrow and see what happens.

Hopefully it never has to come out again, those top two bolts are a PITA. Once I figured out there was an access hole int he floor it was a tad easier but it took almost aslong to remove everything to get to the access hole inside as it did to drop the case.
