Post subject:  transfer case issue??

because of the roads today, (we had alot of snow on the roads and i was slidign around), i put the kj in 4hi and 4 wd works fine.. however today i noticed a grinding sound coming from the front end... from inside the cab it sounds like it is coming from the tires... possibly lubication needed??

also, i have read on here that the transfercase chain can become loose..... toaday when i was in 4wd, while checking the sound from the front end, i also noticed like a metal tick tick souind coming from the case itself. i assume this is the chain? or what else could it be? it only does it for a lil bit, i mean from what i canhear atleast.

any suggestions?

i drive a 2003 KJ sport, 99,800 miles, and it has a manual transmission

thanks everyone

josh

Nothing but snow in Virginia this year. If I didn’t know better, I would think Josh just posted my problem. The only difference is I have 103K miles and an automatic. Same sounds.

So, since you have a manual, I'm guessing you have the command-trac (i.e. 2H,4H,4L, and N) Did you put the transfer case back in 2WD after you were on a surface with good traction? Running for any significant amount of time in 4H can damage driveline components if you're on pavement (yes, even wet pavement has too much traction). The reason being that even if you only go straight, the gear ratios between the front and rear diffs are just different enough to cause binding, so either your axles, diffs, wheels, or transfer case will take a hit.

yea i put it back in 2wd... i used it on the untreated backroads of my home town... with i would say 4-5 inches of snow ontop of the pavement....

would that be the case with the tick i hear?

its not uncommon for crud to get shoved underneath the cv where it goes to the diff - large round metal round smoke grenade lookin piece

when you can, get her clean, change the transfer case fluid if you haven't in awhile

shouldn't be having any grinding noises etc but that would be a good place to start

the chain may be tickin but until you're able to get it clean and make sure you won't know for definite

typically if somethings grinding it's not fully engaged or disengaged

My transfer case blew apart at 66,000 miles when the chain broke. I had not noticed any noise prior until the day off. It started making noise on my way to work, I put it ont he lift and dubbed the chain the noise, tried to make it home with no luck and had to have it towed in.

You should get a noise and some vibes fi the tcase chain is lose.

jack the LF tire up and put it in 4lo and see how muck the dshaft spins before it catches.

Im not sure mines the same issue, but my KJ makes a whining noise if i accelerate or decelerate under 30mph. Its like its rubbing against something in the front (have front and rear ARB air lockers too), im also having issues w/ the tranny. It has messed up shift points, i think i need to get it reflashed as it was suggested by other members here. It is a 45RLE

would be willing to guess it's one of two things.

- Stretched T-case Chain
- Front drive shaft

the front drive shaft can give you all kinds of deceptive symptoms

hopefully it is just a chain... 4wd does still work.... so i dont know.... what do u mean about the front drive shaft? bent? warped?

if the cv on the t-case end of the front drive shaft goes bad, which is indicated by riped, torn, or missing boot you can have grinding, thumping and vibrations the last one i did sounded like there were marbles in the t-case but it was just a destroyed cv.

chains are around $100 and youcan do them youself if you know what you are doing.

I would sugge3st removign the frotn drivesahft first and insopecting it aswell as driving the vehicle without it in to see if the symptoms are stil there.

Yeah, pulling the driveshaft and seeing what noises remain or if the change is probably a good start.
