A)How will you get any speedo readings for one? B)No not all 44s have LSDs C)If you have the bucks the South American KJs had rear 44s but good luck getting one up here D)More problems that what its worth E)not gaining anything really |

The only difference between the 8.25 and a D44 is the D44 is a non-C-clip axle and has more aftermarket support but basically the 2 axles are virtually identical as far as strength goes(in stock form only). |

The dana 44 has been around for 60 years and the 8.25 is stronger than some ( think of the 19-spline two-piece rear axle versions prior to about 1970) and some 44's are stronger ( the thick tubed "HD" versions prevent deflections.) The 8.25 has like an 8.36" ring gear, the Dana has 8.5". The KJ 8.25 has 29-splines, the majority of D44 rears are 30 spline. 8.25 is a c-clip where the Dana uses bolt-in retention, and that is a plus for the Dana. Like about everything, far more D44's came out with an open diff than an LSD. The D44 has the advantage in aftermarket parts availabilty. All in all, I would not spend tha cash to trade any 1/2-ton rated axle (8.25,D44,8.8,M23, 9", 9.25. etc..) for any of the others as the gain is not worth the $$$ when you can get an actual improvement ( 9.5SF,14B, D60, etc...) rear for about the same money. |

So a Dana 60 will fit. What else would need to be done to install that and working functionally? |

Unless your doing a SFA swap you do not want a D60 in the rear. You'd need to shorten it by almost 7"-9" to match the front width(big $$$),not to mention you will be dragging the pumpkin over every grain of sand on the road with 31" tires. Oh and then there's the speedo issue and ABS issue(if you have it). |

Speedo issue... Does anyone use the GPS speed readout to get around this? Just curious. I have "stock" sized tires and I have noticed that my speedo is always within 5-10mph slow of how fast the GPS and the "heads up" signs tell me I am going.... (as in the ones where the police put them there to slow people down).... I was wondering if any of you with larger tires, or with other reasons not to trust your factory speedo think that this is a good idea? Thanks Mark |

I was answering in the spirit of this being a new " all jeep model site" and not KJ specific. I used the Garmin to verify my speedo after the lift, and I just keep the difference in mind. I also think that thelift & taller tires gets you around the top speed governor somewhat as 106 on the clock is 111 on the Garmin. What is the speed rating of an MT/R again? |

It wounldn't be practical if you were keeping the front Dana 30....you still wouldn't be able to go above a 32....JMO

the lack of speedo or severely incorrect speedo causes a stall symptom with the autos which is probably what Troy was referring to haven't done it again since tweaking the engine beyond tcm/pcm but the stock engine unleashed will push our not so aerodynamic hulls to just under 130 on a aircraft runway before running out of steam wouldn't suggest it under any but controlled circumstances it wasn't very stable |

Autos? Understood. I don't have one 111mph in a jeep isn't fun. I did it once... hit the governor. I will not be doing that again. I just wanted to see what it winds out to. My liberty has no business going above 85mph. Mark |
