Looking for a picture or someone to tell me how the boot should be resting on the shaft of the ball joint (the threaded piece, sorry don't know the technical name). Reason being, I bought a set of used ones and it looks like the boots are shot? Just looking for an explanation or pics... thank you!! |

MIne are the 3.5s. The boot is pushed down over the "washer" on the threaded shaft. (I know, not the technical terms... sorry). Sorta like a mushroom... Should I replace them? The move smoothly, the grease in the boot isn't dirty... |

Check your ball joints like this: http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4348 If the rubber boots are not torn, you should be able to fill them with grease. If the ball joints don't check out, the new ones will come with new boots. |

Upper ball joint test: Set the parking brake. Position jack under the lower control arm and raise wheel clear of floor. Lower jack to allow tire to lightly contact floor (most of vehicle weight relieved from the tire). Grasp the top of the tire and apply force, in and outward. While this force is being applied, an observer checks for any movement at the ball joints between the upper control arm and the knuckle. If any lateral movement is evident, replace the ball joint. from:http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=48405&p=533842&hilit=upper+ball+joint#p533842 |

As to your question – the boot is short, that is why the spacer is installed above the knuckle under boot. In JeepinMaxx’s picture, the spacer is the blue metal piece. If you did not get this with your used arms, call Al’s. |

that boot looks different than what came with my 4.5's, mine had a longer boot, perhaps it would be just as simple to order a pair of boots from marlin ? |

There is no spacer. The 3.5s don't have the 4 bolt ball joint system... can I still change them. I will call Marlin in a few... |

Fouros... You can see the Gen 3.5s on Jeepinbyal site if you click on the JBA 6" lift and then details... it will have the 3.5s in the upper right corner with a cardboard sign in between them... Probably the biggest difference is the added clearance, the ball joint is angled to bring knuckle back to specs and the 4 bolt ball joint. Keith |

Spent about 15 minutes on the phone yesterday to Marlin... top notch guy by the way!... thinking I will just replace the Moogs.. since the ones I bought used don't have the castle nut, cotter pin or spacer... that's what I get for buying sight unseen. When they arrived it looked as if they had just came off the KJ... grease, dirt everywhere... there was dog hair ( I assume ), leaves and dirt in the grease around the ball joint... after cleaning them up, decided I'd just replace the BJ's and not worry about it. |
