Post subject:  speedometer off

Hey everyone, I have an '06 KJ that is completely stock with 235/65/R17 tires and my speedometer is off by almost 10mph. Is this something I can adjust or does it need to go to the stealership? Also, is the speedometer sensor in the ABS or rear axle? Thanks for your help.

Time for a trip to the dealership, the only place that can do the adjustment. One of the 4 ABS sensors controls the speedo in your '06. The '02-'05's use a speed sensor on the rear diff but due to ESP for the '06-'07 KJ's use the ABS system.

Grrr I hate being the double poster but I just inquired about the exact same issue in the following thread as I was searching for info on this.
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=47999&start=40

My speedo seems to be out by about 5 mph and the dealer said all was well within spec. Can the dealer dial the speedo in exactly or are they allowed that much leeway when setting speedos???

Thanks for the replies. Anyone that has done this know approximately what it costs?
Also, how do the sensors get, for a lack of a better word, "off"?

Dak,

is it .. more so the gauge .. is off.. or is the speedo actually off?

One of my cluster needles got "Hung" a couple months ago and i had to do a reset/recalibration of the instrument cluster

I believe it is the speedo as the difference increases as the speed increases. The speedo is only off by about 2 mph around 30 mph. I dont see any sign of the sticking needles. Is the reset/recalibration of the instrument cluster easy or is it another dealer only item. I would try it out first if it is an easy DIY job.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I am considering upgrading to a larger tire this summer to help reduce the gap unless I can find a way to prove without a doubt to the dealer that the speedo is off without spending an obscene amount of money to prove it. The The tires are a planned expense for the summer already as I would like a beefier tire than the cheap tires that came with it from the dealer just the final size has not been chosen as of yet.

Post subject:  Re: speedometer off

i just read your other post

theres like an inch difference in a 225-75 and a 245-75

with 255-70's passenger style my speedo was right on the money, with 245-75 mud style my speedo is around 3-4 mph off at 70, when my needle says 70, my gps says between 73 and 74 due to slightly over half an inch difference in tire height, maybe closer to 3/4 inches

so the speedo is probably set for one of the 235-70/75's or something

the speedo recalibration in rotations is one of those dealer only things as i believe TJKJ mentioned

however.. if you plan to run 245-75's i wouldn't worry about it, until after you get the 245-75's and then see how the speedo behaves

i notice very little discrepancy in the needle versus actual below 60 and i'm not experiencing any ill effects

but no, the recal of the instrument cluster wouldn't fix any of the problems you're experiencing

i just got my libby all figured out. for price it will be about $50. now once you are at the dealership make sure you inform them that the 06's need to be adjusted at abs and possibly the pinion. it took three trips and about 15 hours to get mine to within 1 mph at 55. close enough for me. to assure it was correct we paced with a know good stock wrangler, and my altima, and with two different gps units.

Mine is off about 5MPH ( High ) after I went to an All Terrain Tires, I wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't for my GPS so I use it to judge my speed instead of the speedometer.
