Post subject:  question about a lift

im new to lost and this is my first post. i bought a daystar 2.5" lift and after doing alot of research on this forum, im not sure i want to use this lift. I dont have alot of money right now so can i use the daystar in the front with my oem struts and OME coils in the rear. I did get new ranchos for the rear. The front will be changed out to OME eventually but I just dont have the money right now.

Howdy wyomingjeep Welcome to LOST

Actually Daystar front / OME- Rancho rear works okay - that was all that was available for CRD's for a couple of years - the front springs did sag over 30,000 miles - but if you're replacing them in the future it's reasonable for a temporary measure.

Agreed - I've never run it, but I think you'd be OK for a while. It may not be optimal, but it's doable.

would using the original struts and daystar in front be ok for a couple of months

Probably - it does depend a lot on how & where you're driving - I wouldn't run Autocross with 'em or high speed mountain passes either - but you can probably go to/from work without much problem.

The stock struts weren't great to begin with - they mainly exist to keep the wheels from falling off in shipping, and by 20-30K miles what damping they had is gone.

The Daystar puts a 2" spacer under the spring but a 1" top plate - so the spring is now 1" compressed so for the 1st 300 lbs of input there's no motion - where stock you'd get 1" of compression - so your springs act stiffer. On the rebound the damping on the strut does not match spring force - so it will act weird.

But if you're not pushing the suspension it's not necessarily an issue - just be aware that it's different and drive carefully.

Well I decided to scrap the daystar and go with OME and ranchos all around. Ill have to piece it together over the next few months but I think it will be worth the wait

Great choice, better to do it right in the beginning than to redo it a few months down the road . You won't be sorry you did. It took me 2 months to get everything together for my first lift and I ran it 100,000 miles so was the way to go!

While I can't answer for sure about cut daystar blocks (I don't see why it wouldn't work, but cutting it straight across the bottoms would be a PITA using hand tools... you would almost want to put them in a lathe or at least a cut-off saw... just make sure that you put the little tab back in the bottom of the block so you can line the springs up properly..

I just installed the daystar lift on my 06 liberty.

The rear was straightforward, however I had to fabricate tabs to drop my brake lines... I don't know if this extends to 05 liberties, but it is a "problem" with the 06 and 07's for sure..

I found the front install was a little bit more involved.. you have to remove the battery tray to access the upper shock plate, and you have to remove the air box to access the drivers side shock plate.

I was able to do the entire lift with only removing the lower ball joint... but the second time I attacked it I did the brakes as well and it was much easier to work without the disk in the way... just zip tie your caliper to the upper control arm and make sure you keep the line out of the way when yuou start putting everything back together. (the first time I THOUGHT I was missing parts.... I wasn't but ended up doing it twice none-the-less)

Make sure you line the groove in the shock body with how it needs to go on the clevis to the top perch.

Impacts make the job much easier.

Eventually I plan to go full spring, but for now I am going to put my money into some air lockers now that I have the ground clearance issue out of the way :D

I hope this post helps you decide what you want to do :)

Running stock front shocks (with 121,000 miles on them) was not a problem

Found a local guy with a Daystar 2.5" lift still in the box for $125CDN. I'm considering buying it, but I'm just curious what other expenses I'm looking at? Just the rear shocks, or am I looking at brake line and more?

I'll let someone else answer. I think the brake line issue doesn't apply to your 03.

are you going to install it yourself?

also add for an alignment.

With an 03 your springs and shocks are shot by now unless its been sitting on blocks for the last 6 years. At the very least replace the front shocks, of course you have to replace the rears with longer ones. It will give you some lift for a while but sooner or later you'll be sitting at stock height with stacked springs
So you'll need
all 4 shocks
2 front bumpstop's From Teraflex
alignment
of course you already know that for another 200 bucks (On top of the 125 purchase price and the shocks /bumpstops) you would have a full spring lift

Almost fell of my chair for a minute. I thought Tom was inferring that new shox would give you some lift for a little while...

Then I re-read.

Sorry for the insult MuddMan
