So, it looks like my jeep is going to be at the mercy of STT again. This week he is pulling the front apart with hopes of fulfilling my winch bumper dreams. We have a killer design but I have no winch.... I have not had alot of dealings with winches so I have no idea what to look for or which brand to use. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. milemarker and warn are my preferences but i'll probably end up getting another northern tools brand winch, the last one i bought from NT probably has 300 miles of winching, 100 ft at a time, on it, pretty much gets used every day and they've not had a problem with it yet after about 4 years I think, but not sure, milemarker used to have a contract with the military, the winches on our sandcats were MM's |

for 380 bucks the northern tools 9k winch with 6.6hp and 172:1 gearing and a remote, it is pretty hard to beat i originally thought that it was going to have problems with heating up because most 'self recovery' winches are geared at like 200 something to 1, but never had a problem with it, i may just buy a new one and put the old one on my jeep and put the new one on the wrecker |

I have a buddy with a Smittybilt on his TJ and loves it. He uses it all the time since he's great at getting stuck with no one around. |

You want a winch that is at least strong enough to pull 1 1/2 times the weight of your vehicle (and remember not to try and winch another vehicle that exceeds the load). The KJ stock is just over 4k lbs. Fully loaded down, it can exceed 5k so a winch of 8K would be good enough. |

My wife told me to get one the other day after I pulled a car out of a mud hole.... couldn't tell if she was serious or just jokin.  hhmmm... new winch would mean new custom front bumper too
