| Post subject: | Problem with AC????? |
Turned the AC on about 2 weeks ago was fine then after awhile sounds like the ac compressor pulley is making noise? Turned the ac off and it was still making noise. Went out the next day and started the Jeep all was fine? Turned AC on yesterday and right away started making the noise again? Turned AC off and its still making the noise. Started it this morning was still making noise, just started it before and it seems to be getting quieter . Anyone have any similar problem? It is a 2002 Jeep Liberty with about 76,000 miles on it. Any ideas, or help would be GREATLY Appreciated Thanks Tammy |

Just had the same thing happen to my O3. It is the AC compressor clutch. Getting just the clutch fixed is almost as expensive as replacing the whole clutch/compressor unit. Get a new or remanufactured compressor/clutch and everything should be OK. If you continue to drive it the heat from the dragging clutch may melt your serpentine belt. I know, it sucks, but that is just the way it is. |

Wondering what is actually wrong now? We spent some time on it yesterday had it running with fan on position 1 and AC on recirculate and the clutch is engaging and disengaging like it should, only thing is when it disengages sounds like the pulley is making noise almost like a bearing noise??? This same noise stays there even when you turn the AC completely off, although sometimes not as loud. AC is blowing COLD air. Could this possibly be a bearing in the pulley going bad, looks like you can''t just buy the pulley for it? Really don't have the 500-900 to fork out right now to have someone else fix it, we pretty much do all our own work on the jeeps. We really have no issue with the AC not blowing cold air if it wasn't for the noise we wouldn't even think there was a problem with it? Anyone else have any kind of noise from the compressor or pulley area ? Thanks Tammy |

If you don't really need the AC you might want to check and see if you can use a serpentine belt that will not go around that pulley if it is possible until you can get the AC repaired. Seems like I have seen a posting on one of the Liberty forums on that subject. |

Just my thoughts, typically, a bad compressor clutch will cause a loud screeching noise, that would be caused by the clutch slipping against the pulley, which should go away once the a/c is turned off, a bearing will usually make more of a whine, and will do it ac on or off, unless its internal to the compressor (not the pulley), then it would go away as the a/c is off, I highly doubt its internal though. Is it possible that the idler pulley which is below the a/c compressor could be going bad??? It is very common. First things first tho, before buying parts from a diagnosis online, if you are able to remove the serpentine belt, do so, and turn every pulley by hand to feel for any rough spots in their bearings. wiggle the pulleys (all of them) up and down, side to side to check for bearing tightness. If any of them are rough when spinning by hand, or loose feeling when wiggling, chances are that pulley's bearing is about to go. Do this and at least youll know if the pulley bearings are in good, quiet shape. Hope this helps.

well we took the serpentine belt off to see if maybe it was the tensioner pulley well that turns nice and easy no problem but the AC compressor pulley spins but is rough and not as freely and making the noise it does when running with ac off or on so going to get a puller to pull it of and go from there. As for bypassing AC compressor,I used a 827K6 Autozone belt. The main thing is make sure the water pump rotates the correct direction. There is a post here,on LOST,with pictures...somewhere. |

I had the same problem. Got one from a junk yard and that one is bad also. Just unplug it and no noise. I plan on getting a new one soon. |

Well we have it all apart Here are some good links for people who would like to try this on there own. This link shows you how to disassemble the ac clutch http://www.sparkys-answers.com/2009/03/2002-jeep-liberty-intermitent-ac.html Also on Ebay which is where we ordered our part this is the link for the kit we ordered he answered all our questions also . http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jeep-Liberty-AC-Compressor-CLUTCH-KIT-02-03-04-05-A-C-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem335c35654fQQitemZ220590335311QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories Can also use ebay to find used and new ac compressors...anywhre from $130 up to over $300 are main reason with going with the AC compressor clutch kit was it was affordable and while we still think we just need the pulley bearing, we thought while we have it apart might as well do it all.... Plus we didnt want to go get the ac discharged because its not just the compressor you have to replace, also the accumulator, orfice tube, O rings... here is a link for the whole thing http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2002-2005-Jeep-Liberty-3-7-A-C-AC-compressor-kit-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem5d247cbd45QQitemZ400044113221QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories Hope this helps anyone with similar problems... Everything back together no noise Was most likely the bearing in the ac pulley but we also replaced the clutch to and everything is working fine.
