switching to manual

How possible is it to swith an automatic over to manual. Just kind of wondering out loud if an 06 could take a manual tranny from an 04.....some insight would be great

Hope someone with more info than me chimes in but I'm pretty sure you will need at least:
Tranny with Bellhousing
Pedal and associated hardware.
TCM at the very least on the electronics side, and I'd assume a starscan to reflash the PCM or a PCM for a standard transmission.
New trim piece for the center console.
Not sure the length of the 6 speed vs the auto, but maybe shorter/longer driveshafts too.

I have got access to a parts liberty guy is trying to get rid of it I am the only person that takes parts from it. It has a full drivetrain on it and wondered if the tranny would matchup somewhat easily.

BTW jeep was a roll over engine and roof took the brunt of the roll

It can be done, how ever because of the new electronics and all, it would be cheaper to buy a KJ with a manual in it.

depends how much cash you're talkin for the salvage vehicle whether or not its cost effective to do it

in my book, unless you've not invested $ and time into the current vehicle, i'd rather spend the money on a salvage vehicle or two

it's pretty much pcm, pedal, linkage, lines resovior, tranny w/ bell and I don't remember if the tranny supports have to be moved or not, if not, then driveshafts are the same, if it does i've got the tc, driveshafts etc from the 6speed donor

I've got all the stuff to swap a 6speed in, spent less than 1 grand not including the new clutch throwouts and pilot

you just have to be smart, and patient, when acquiring your stuff, if you get in a hurry, you'll easily and quickly spend 4-6g's just getting the stuff

with enough patience and effort, there's absolutely nothing that is impossible within reason

need to start by getting a list of as many junk yards and used suppliers in your area as possible, and it doesn't hurt to keep good tabs on insurance salvage auctions, calling a few of them and telling them what you plan to do so that they can keep an eye out for you is a good place to start

Sounds like you already have the proper vehicle to strip, probably no need in worrying about gathering parts elsewhere. You just have to make sure you get EVERY part needed for swap before that vehicle goes bye-bye. Is there anyway he can keep it or you can get whole vehicle until you get all needed parts, then give back to him?

Its not going anywhere, but he's the kind of guy that if you get him on a good day he'll just give you the parts. But on a bad day he'll charge you double. So.....maybe i can work something out with him. He does mainly XJ's and wranglers, thats what most of the market around here is. He only has the one KJ and I am the only one that takes parts from it.

maybe I can play lets make a deal....

This is me just thinking out loud. I have some other stuff to take care of first, like starting to replace wear and tear items. BUT that doesn't mean that I won't do this at some point maybe winter/spring time.

I really need to find a place to work on this other than infront of my duplex on the street.......I have turned into the streets hillbilly, which is saying somthing cause where I live I probley have more teeth than most of my neighbors combined! :ROTFL:

I have to agree with the other posters.....the change can be done, but probably the electronics will be the biggest issue and may be a deal breaker.
Back in another life, a high school friend and I did this on a Chevy Corvair...that, folks, was an experience :dizzy:

the electronics is more so the less complicated part

it's getting everything together and swapped over, if the donor vehicle is missing alot of stuff, lines, etc, it'll quickly nickle and dime you to death

Dunno if this helps, but if you can go with the 04's PCM maybe that would help if you were going to do a SFA?

If it has not already been mentioned, you will need the transfer case and the driveshafts. The manuals use a differnet part time transfer case than the autos use.

You can use the 231 behind either manual offered,they just chose to use the 231HD(241J) behind the 6 speeds due to the ramping JK intro which ate alot of 231's leaving the KJ's short handed.

TJ, is the 231HD "Heavy Duty" compared to the "regular" 231's?
