Post subject:  KJ Springs from OZ (Australia)??

Has anyone ever put on the "King Springs" from the land down under?

I've found their website during the quest to see if the CRD springs are different than our gasser versions. The information I have on them is:

www.kingsprings.com.au

King Springs Part No's KJFR-27 (front) & KJRR-28 (rear) to raise your vehicle approximately 30mm from factory std height. (that's about 1 inch for ya'll)

These coils are designed with an increase in spring rate of approximately 25%.

RRP is AUD$175.00 per pair. (US$137)

Fedex AUD$305.00 (4-7 days) (US$230)

I'd be very interested in these as they are NOT a "lift kit" but do raise the KJ just the margin I'm after.

I have heard positive things about King Springs on other boards...I don't have any first hand knowledge but I was talking to a guy from OZ the other day about 4x4's and he said springs down there and off road suspensions are different because they are more stict about lift kits (something about not being able to lift more then an inch or so...) so their kits generally focus more on flex rather then height and clearance...

It's true that there are some pretty strict lift regulations here, they vary state to state, and other things like; you've got to have mud-flaps and your tyres aren't allowed to protrude past the guards. But there are plenty of people that run much more than an inch of lift. For example;

I'm afraid I know nothing about King Springs though!

Ed-that TJ wouldn't street legal down there would it? The wheels extend past the fender flares, no mud gaurds and is the lift too high?

One of the guys on ausjeepoffroad forum had the Kings - they sagged under the weight of his ARB bar. After doing tons of research on the CRD of late, and having swapped my OME springs for the Daystar spacers and the factory springs - I'd recommend you stick to the the factory springs with either the Daystar 1.5inch and Rocky Road top plates (what I have), or the Daystar 2.5inch with Daystar top plates (comes as a kit).

It's on the edge of legality! As is my KJ come to think of it!
:)

Fortunately Wilmo's the expert on CRD lifts so he's managed to answer your questions rather than just cluttering up the thread like I'm doing!

Good on him.

Bear in mind that almost all the accesories for the CRD are for the OLD 2.5CRD, now discontinued and lighter than the present 2.8CRD.
Same problem with OME 927's.

Are you sure about that 'cherokj' ?? The engines are identicle except for stroke size and a bigger (not that much bigger) Garrett Turbo.

How could the 2.5 and 2.8 be that different in weight ??? :?:

All I know is that in my 03 Renegade had king Springs in and they sucked - 28mm lift in the front and 70mm in the rear? That's crap. I thought it was an old school dragster at one stage.....? I used to work at Fulcrum Suspension for 3.5yrs and engineered many springs for 4x4's and TJ's with Kings as we worked closely with them. I dont know how they've gone in recent years but they sure got the 3.7lt KJ wrong.......

BUT

You know what the funny thing is??? KING SPRINGS MANUFACTURE OME SPRINGS..............go figure.......

Something tells me i'm going to have a couple of different sets of coils in the front of my new KJ CRD in Feb......

All I can say is learn by my pain and don't put the OME 927 springs in your CRD - they are way too soft and your car will corner like crap and feel quite nervous on the road, and get an inch less lift compared to the Daystar spacer(s) with the Factory springs. OME rear is fine though.

The only comment I have is that the ARB bar weighs a LOT - and whatever springs you put in there are going to compress because of the weight of it. Rocky Road advertise their Combo lift (the 1.5inch Daystar and their 3/8 top plate) as 2.125 inches.....on mine with the ARB bar it came up 30mm - an inch lower than advertised. Lucky the CRD springs are already 30mm higher than a petrol model or this wouldn't provide enough lift and I would have had to go with the 2.5inch Daystar kit.

Honestly, unless you need a winch, or need a bar to protect the front from Kangaroo strikes like we do in Country Australia, I wouldn't put a bar on the KJ. Certainly don't do it for looks, because your lift height is going to suffer.

Well, the 2.5 is the old VM we had on the XJ with some modifications...a single head for the 4 cylinders -not one for each c. like the XJ-, etc. That modifications make it boosting the power to 143HP. The 2.8 is the engine they used for ages with the chrysler voyager, and I think that it is not a VM. I may be wrong, though.
Anyway, the 2.5 weighs 1891kg and the 2.8 weighs 2150kg ( manual models, not automatic ).
If you want my opinion, I would not mount a 927 even on the 2.5, but this is a bit personal taste as i like a stiff suspension. In fact I'm waiting for the new OME springs for the 2.8 to install in my 2.5!.
Guys at OME are working on it.
I will be waiting till summer...after that if they don't launch a new set of springs for the CRD I will be looking for another solution.

Cheers

The 2.8L for the KJ is a VM engine. The engine is based off the 2.5L, but I'm not sure how they got the extra displacement. If it's just bored out, then the block may be the same. If it's got a longer stroke, that may have required a larger block. You're definitely looking at larger intake parts because you've got to get the air in to fill that extra volume. Might have required a slightly larger oil reserve, cooling system, etc.

Sure would be nice to get my hands on one with the 6-spd manual....but DC/Jeep still won't offer that here in the States.

we will be getting 6 speed manual 2.8CRD in 2 months

they should be on the boat now, I cannot wait to take one for a spin,

Back to the topic

Kings springs would be ok for a 3.7 no bar but your best bet is to wait for one of the brisbane guys to get a link to this thread, I will email him a link to it

Guys, i had King Sp[rings for about 6 months the front gave me 25mm and rear about 50mm, with the standard shocks they were fine, however the car didn't sit level the front kept dropping, the rear was good though. I wasted 600 hundred dollars as i now have the the ome kit and unlike the CRD guys this kit works a treat on the petrol models.
My thoughts don't waste the money on the kings unless they do a more heavy duty front spring.

Hutch,

Sounds like you have some good (and bad) experience with these King Springs. I appreciate your input and advice. I think you just same me several hundred dollars (US$).

Need to resurrect this topic for a bit more info. Seems King Springs does make a HD version for the CRD KJ. I have a petrol 4x4 KJ. If the petrol springs sag under the weight of the CRD wouldn't it make good sense that the HD springs for the CRD would be a great match for my petrol KJ.

I'm only bringing this up AGAIN, as I would like to get that extra 1 inch of lift w/o a lift kit. Can't hike the KJ up any further than the 1 inch due to an old dog that needs to jump up into it...yeah, me the old dog but also my old dog.

Ever think about a clevis lift for the front?

Just go the OME springs, kings are not worth it.

Hutch,

Are you saying, use CRD OEM springs? Would I gain any lift if I did? I'd like to get about 1 inch or so and not use a "clivis" lift trick.

OME not OEM -
Old Man Emu - Australian company that makes springs and shock - their springs for the KJ give about a 1 to 11/2" lift (although I think that's measured from the original 2002's that were higher)
CRD springs should be the same length as gas springs just stiffer, so it may or may not lift your KJ depending on how much your orignial springs have sagged.

Padrino, based on a new car you will get 1.5 to 2 inches of lift, i got 40mm at front and 50mm at rear. which is just below two inches front and two inches at rear. They are a good set up.

Hutch.
