Hi All,

I am changing the oil on my 2006 Liberty CRD and I am a bit concerned.

My drain plug was kind of hard to remove, but it eventually came out. At first I had to apply a lot of pressure to losen it, once I losened the drain plug it came out with no problem.

My issue is that I don't have a copper washer on the drain bolt. Should there be a drain plug? When I bought the oil filter at the dealer, they did not offer to sell me any copper washers (although I did not ask). I don't want to use that plug without a washer if one is necessary.

I've read in some posts that a washer should be used, so does that mean the previous owner didn't use a washer and thus my drain plug is damaged?

Any advice/info is greatly appreciated. I will go to the dealer to see if I can purchase a washer.

Without the washer it's probable the first threads are messed up
this is a big deal because you only have ~4 threads in the pan.

search over in the CRD section for oil pan stripped threads,

If you had the original hex-key plug in there, the easiest and best fix for this is to purchase a Fumoto valve to replace the entire drain plug. It is a ball valve that replaces the drain plug, and comes with its own gasket. If you install one, you will wonder how you ever changed oil without it.

If it wasn't leaking then just go to the dealer and get a washer. If you're new at this you may want to get a torque wrench to help you avoid over tightening the plug. If it leaks after that, you need to try the alternative plugs mentioned earlier in this thread.

I had the same problem. Went to the dealer and got a new plug and washer. The new plug is a 7/8 socket I believe. Much better than the original.

Imagine how much better the hex-head bolt is over the original allen bolt. . . then multiply that by a bajillion. That's how much better the Fumoto valve is over any kind of drain plug. Best $25 I ever spent.
