Post subject:  Lift, Wheel and Tire Size question

Looking for some help on the daunting task of selecting a lift and wheels. I have done many searches of the forums and found a bunch of results but they have only served to confuse me a bit. I know this much, I pretty much have settled on the Moab wheels but need some help with tire sizes. I don’t really care to go to big since I probably won’t do much offroading at this point in time, I want to know what sizes will work with no or minor rubbing? I don’t really feel like cutting or modifying the vehicle all that much just for tires. This brings up the other part, I would like to add a 2” lift but am also confused on brands, I thought lifts for the liberty were fairly straight forward but some posts recommended not getting some brands of lifts due to quality issues, etc. Obviously, I’d like to install the lift and not have to worry about it again. Any suggestions on lifts, and tire sizes?

Thanks,

Mike

An OME/Rancho lift runs around $700 and will get you around 2.5 inches without adding a top plate or clevis lift. You use OME 927 front springs, 948 rear springs, and OME, Bilstein or Rancho shocks all around. This is probably your best bet and will get you the best ride for your money. If you want a little more height you can add a rustys style top plate and a clevis lift, or buy a frankenlift for $1014.92 from Boulderbars.com. OME or Frankenlift will get you the best ride quality and last the longest time so you dont have to worry about doing it all over again later. If your on a tight budget you can use a Daystar 2.5 spacer lift, but if your KJ has over 30,000 miles on it your suspension is shot and needs replacing anyway so you mind as well go OME or Franky. 245/75/16 is the biggest you can go without having do do trimming, and you may still need to pound your pinch welds.
If I got anything wrong feel free to correct me everyone. Best of luck,
Dalton

I'd recommend OME/OME - I had Ranchos - they didn't respond as well
(it's a CRD thing - they're fine for the gassers)

most folks run 245/75/16 and depending on the tread width it may or may not hit the pinch weld - fairly easy to pound down (don't cut it's structurally significant)

you can potentially fit a 235/85/16 or 265/75/16 - but expect adjustment tweaks like additional clevis lift - top spacer and lots more plastic liner trimming.

Thanks for the info, exactly what I was looking to get straightened out. I will look into the OME lift.

Edit: After looking at the OME lifts, I only see a 1.5" lift, is the 2.5" a typo?

Thanks again,

Mike

The OME spring is physically 1.5" longer than stock - however because they're stiffer - they compress less so you get more lift.

I took out a 2.5" Daystar - put in a 1.5 OME - and had the same height.
(of course the Daystar had sagged the stock springs a bit -
so I wasn't a full 2.5 over stock with them even though it was a 2.5" spacer)

Thinking ahead a little bit (still need to put the lift on the liberty) about wheels, I want to get a set of the Moab wheels (Part No. 82208904) but dont know how they fit vs. the stock wheels and would like some help. How is the backspacing and will I have any issues, etc. Also, I thought the lug pattern for the 16" Moab's will work as long as they are not the 17s is this true?

Thanks.

Mike

Moabs from TJs will work,
but not JKs different bolt pattern
backspacing is same as stock
problem is they are 8 inches wide so wider than most need for the size tires we can run. What are your plans for tires/size and brand??

Yeah, thats a good question. I'm still trying to decide and am getting confused by all the numbers. What I do know is, I would like to go a touch bigger to fill some of the wheel well after it's lifted but don't want to have to do anything to prevent rubbing. Any suggestions as far as sizes go? Sorry, but I'm not very familiar with tire sizes and the geometry of the wheels.

Post subject:  Re: Lift, Wheel and Tire Size question

It really depends on WHICH TIRE you choose. Same tire size (i.e. 245/75r16) could fit fine if it has a narrow tread design, or rub all over. My 235/75r16 rubbed on sway bar after lift, but spacers (or new wheels) that set them out wider to avoid the sway bar, caused minute rubbing on pinch weld plastic. Typically a certain size tire would rub more likely if it were a mud terrain rather than street tire.

After looking into some more, kicking around these two tires:

1) Goodyear Wrangler MT/R With Kevlar
2) BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2

Any experience with the clearances, rubbing, etc.

Thanks.
