need help please kinda urgent

drained and replaced my filter on my trans today and now I am adding fluid back in via the dipstick.
My urgent question is...
I measured that I drained out 5 quarts because I let it set for about 3 hours draining.
Therefore, I need to add 5 quarts of ATF+4 back in correct?

Yes. Then start it up drive it for a bit and recheck it.

After driving it up to operating temp, add a little at a time if needed. It is easy to add fluid, hard to get it out if you add too much. (ask me how I know. . .)

I would also suggest checking again after letting it sit overnight, when the fluid is cold, and compare the readings. I find it tricky to read the trans dipstick when the fluid is hot.

okay my bro and I just got off the phone and he told me that when he cleaned the pan with mineral solvent he poured what he used in the bucket. so it 5 quarts of drained atf and solvent. so i added 4 quarts and a little bit more.. like a 1/20 and I am going to let it settle over night and check it in the morning...
that darn dip stick is hard to read btw...! :furious:

Hey be thankful that you even have one to read. I understand that new vehicles aren't coming with transmission dipsticks anymore.

Wow, the only way to fill the transmission is through the dipstick? That must take a lot of patience.

I just remember trying all kinds of stuff to get it out till Fred came round. :ROTFL:

It was some little aluminum nozzle Lee rigged up on a ATF bottle rather than just using a narrow funnel. I came a hair's width away from just saying, "I'm tired, so what if it's in there, let's button her up and go home."

Yeah man, Fred is like Batman - always in the nick of time. Maybe a shop-vac can remove trans fluid too? :-)r

Yeah I've swamped a few times and changed my fluids..... It's not as bad as it seems. Next time I am going to add a drain bung to the pan for easier draining of the ATF. It's messy as hell to just pop the pan and hope for the best.
