Was in serious mud yesterday navigating back roads in Kansas. Just put in a used front drive shaft, my other one was about gone. Now I'm getting clicking and occasional cracking binding noises, sounds bad! This is happening in 2 wheel drive (part time 4x4 on a 5 speed Liberty). In 4 wheel drive it sounds like hell. Question is, should I pull the drive shaft this morning before heading out on another storm? I won't get off the hard surface, but I fear it's going to bind up and rip something out. I didn't realize a front drive shaft turned when 4x4 is not engaged, but I guess mine does.....and my mechanic that just rebuilt my transfer case said it does some, but not at full speed. |

You can take it out. 8mm socket on both ends. It takes about 20 min. Were are you at in ks today. |

First of all...in a Jeep Liberty (and many other Chrysler products too) your front axle shafts and your front driveshaft turn 100% of the time. If you switch to 2WD, all you are doing is disconnecting the driveshaft at the transfer case. So if the Jeep moves, the driveshaft will still spin. The front spins ALL the time. If you are having horrible noises then you have a CV joint failing on an axle shaft, or a joint in the driveshaft failing, or your transfer case could have a problem internally with the chain. There is a small chance you could have a problem inside your front differential also. |

Ok thanks for the information! I know it's the drive shaft and now that I know it turns regardless..... I need to get it out of there or something will bind up and shut me down. And yes I need to get some KJ/Tornado shots up. Never done one before, will work on it today. Right now I'm in Salina, will likely go NW from here into Nebraska. |
