Post subject:  Too much play in steering at center

I've recently noticed the steering wheel at center has about a quarter to half inch of play where there's zero resistance in the steering wheel rotation and zero input to the wheels. The steering wheel has this zero-resistance play at center even when the vehicle is turned off. Nearing center from a turn (about an inch from center) it feels like the wheels come close to having a mind of their own and have more ability to push the steering wheel back in the opposite direction depending on road irregularities.

The recall for ball joints was done shortly after purchase. The CRD has 52,000 miles on it.

Does it sound like something loose in the steering column on the order of just tighten a nut to lock down the steering wheel? The fact it has this wiggle at center when it is turned off suggests (to me) this is strictly a physical/mechanical issue closer to the steering wheel than the wheels. But, I'm no expert. Does it sound like something farther into the steering box?

While rocking the steering wheel look at the steering shaft that connects to the R&P,if the shaft is moving but not the wheels it's the R&P that is bad.

I had this with mine. (it may be coming back). I had the shaft replaced between the firewall and the rack. It was completely hosed for some reason. It was almost scary to drive it. Actually, the dealer called me back and said they would keep it overnight while waiting for the part because it was unsafe to drive.

That was nice to know after I drove it home from Toledo to Fort Wayne.
