Noobie from Austin Texas.

Posted same on a 2007 posting but wasnt sure if anyone would read thu that far back

Purchased new 02 liberty Ltd 4x4 - All Stock. She now has 160K and only only recall/maintenance work needed thus far.
She has been sleeping in the driveway since April...Drove her like a bat out of hell 80+mph home one eve b/c I was running late for night out with wifey...Doh! Parked her out front, got ready, climbed back in and she would barely turn over and CEL now on. Soo...being new to Austin and not having used a mech, i towed her to dealer...They said no compression #2, gimme 5K and well drop a new one in her, NOT! So did some research found Jeep only repair shop (I'm told he is THE goto jeep guy in town). He stated they would do whatever would work best for me budget/comfort wise, RR , find one from yard or 'Jasper Engine" with 3 Yr/100K warrenty and they replace all cooling/air hoses, Water pump and warrent their work at 100% for life of warrenty. I've seen a few bad reviews on Jasper Engines but they were all a bit dated...

My questions is why not Jasper?

Also any feedback from anyone else that has dropped a new used engine and how it is holding up...i ask this because of all the valve spring issues i read about online.

Had this same thing happen to mine while on vacation in SC (I live in IN). Hadn't been flogging it at all though, the valve spring broke and dumped the valve so I got a rebuilt crate motor from LKQ (thru the warranty I bought thru the stealership). Hasn't even had it's first 3K mile oil change yet, so far so good. Changed the oil when I got back from SC with it and just been local around town driving for now.

Original engine had 83K on it when it bit the dust.....and was thoroughly checked out BEFORE the trip. It's an '02 sport 4x4 BTW.

Well, I've got a Jasper engine in mine and I haven't had any problems. Not sure exactly when it was put in (bought the Libby about a year and half ago with the Jasper rebuilt already in) and I've put about 40,000 miles on it with no problems so far.

LKQ IIRC stands for "like kind and quality", google search will turn it up. I think the motor was around $2500 for the assembled long block. The warranty company paid for it and the install so I was only out $50 for the fluids to refill everything since for some strange reason those weren't covered.

I kinda lucked out in that they didn't have a used motor anywhere in the area where it broke down so I got the new one. Usually from what I understand from the dealing with it they try to source a used motor locally with about the same mileage on it for a replacement. If none are available then the rebuilt long block is drop shipped to the installer.

Have a mechanic look at the cylinder before you buy a new engine. I had the exact same thing happen to me, same cylinder actually- The dealer said new engine fork over the money and i said no way! Had a mechanic friend look at it and the valve SPRING had broken, therefore no compression. It went from 3k to $300. You've probably already had it looked at, but i wanted to try and help out a fellow jeeper if you havent already.

As long as the valve retainers held onto the valve, you could just fix that. On mine it let the valve drop and the piston smacked it....wasn't pretty. :(

No hadn't had the heads pulled just yet, they (Delar) wanted an additional $300 to tear down, figured if anyone was going to tear anything down it would not be the dealership 4 sure. Once my local Jeep shop gets in their i'll make the final decision, but wanted to know what viable options i had if the engine turns out to be totally shot. Although with 160K on her i amy opt to just drop the new one in. Course if just the spring and he says the insides look good, well then.....LIFT her up and slap on some new tires! OME of course
