I have a 5 speed with the stock 3.73 gears and i have been running 245/75's for about 2 years. I am good to go with 1st thru 4th gear and have noted no significant loss of power in those gears but 5th gear is about worthless. When i take trips in my KJ and am in 5th for awhile i notice the transmission gets clunky (getting into and out of gears) so i am thinking the tranny temp is elevated due to the extra strain. At 60mph at am at just under 2k RPM and at 70mph i am at 2600RPM but still note a significant drag. Obviously, the re-gear will solve most of this problem and will eliminate the tranny temp issue, i believe.
My question is, is it recommended to go with the 4.10's or should i consider dishing out the extra substantially more money for the steel diff and go with 4.56 or 4.88's? i am inclined to think the 4.10's would be enough but wanted the consensus. I would like to step up another tire size but don't see it happening as while offroading now i have some rubbing at full stuff and droop (stock bumpstops as i haven't wanted to lose any suspension travel). Is there another weak link beside the front diff and the CV angle? Is there a way to solve the CV angle issue without a cradle drop?
Lastly, can someone please provide a link and all part #'s for all the parts needed for a 4.10 re-gear incase that is the direction i choose to go. (did a search and couldn't find a part's list and link)
Thanks.
If you go with the front steel diff. with 4.56 you'll also need to up grade the rear C8.25.
the 4.10 gear is not cheap so imagine the total $$$of the steel front diff. + the new gears front and back......
i had genuine DANA SPICER for 30a in front and yukon in the back .
it's a very tricky job to do, have a tranny/diff shop that you trust to have it done
