How long has your alternator lasted?? My wife's KJ, which she doesn't let me wheel, has 153k on it and it's going very strong. I did the water pump at about 130 and it only had very little play. I just didn't want for it to go out on her at an inopportune time. Her battery seemed fine until a few months ago when it just died and I replaced it at about 135k or so....that's a long time for a stock battery on an 04 KJ!! I was thinking of replacing it last winter but it started fine....and then just died. Oh well.

Thinking of doing the alternator now just so I don't kill a battery and have to do the alternator. What have yall got for mileage on alternators?? I wheel two XJs and don't get all that good of mileage out of them but that's with winch/lights, and they get mud sometimes, so that's understandable.

I am at 117k with winch and lights and have not had any problems with my alt. I am also the only owner of my KJ thus far. :) Since you are higher in mileage...I do not know what to say. About once every...8 months or so I test my alternator though. You never know.

In a KJ the alternator will last some time, you do get those early breakdowns but in general they are not a short lived part due to the many sensors that keep it alive for a long time. The biggest issue is keeping the voltage regulator in good working order, but that is hard since it is part of the PCM.Most alternator issues in a KJ have been PCM related and not the actual alternator itself.

what can I do about the PCM?? Check it?? So the reg is not in the alternator....great. If the reg goes, does that mean the PCM needs replacement?
