Hey guys, just wondering how fast you guys have driven under 4hi. I don't typically go over 25mph for short periods of time under 4hi, but lately all the roads have been getting poopy with all the snow, and I am going to start to travel a lot, and just not too sure on how fast you can go under 4hi. Maybe this is a n00b question, but I am a mega n00b when it comes to my Jeep, but holy hell it sticks like glue when I'm on 4hi.

ive gone 65 in 4hi but thats the highest i think anyone should have to go if they have to put it in 4hi because of conditions :2cents: also with all-terrain tires and snow and ice rating u will never slip under 40 mph if u dont drive aggresive also my :2cents:

I never use 4 wheel drive except for really bad conditions and driving slow, with proper tires etc you don't need it even on snow covered roads. If you need 4 wheel drive its too bad out to be running 55-65 mph. I just ran across part of PA last weekend with 4 inches of snow on the turnpike in the left lane at 60-65 and two wheel drive, no problems. False sense of security for some, like people who want to run 4 wheel drive when its raining,...stupid IMO ! :banghead:

IMHO sometimes you are unaware of where the icy or (under the snow) icy spots may be. Of course a bridge you will slow down for when cold. In rear wheel drive on ice and you get an unexpected downshift on a corner at any speed over 15MPH your sideways. In four wheel drive you have much more control over that. I won't pretend to know what Chysler says but I'm positive it's more safe or easier in four wheel drive. If you take a 72 454 Chevelle or similar and have about 450lbs of torque and add a Detroit locker to it and try to take off from a light on a left or right turn in the rain it will be a humbling sideways experience. Without the locker it's not hard but you just spin more. Four wheel drive almost eliminates that. If you have the select track transfer case and you are in part time four wheel drive it uses a clutch between the front and back drive shafts the same as any full time four wheel drive car or truck. They are driven and designed to be at all speeds. The clutch helps out with turning. The Command track transfer case does not have the clutch and the front and rear drive shafts are going to spin no matter what by way of the meshed gears. I don't know if that would change recommended speeds but I doubt it.

I have to add this kj is the first vehicle I've owned with traction control. Could change my previous post some but on ICE you can't eliminate the principle.

I agree. Full Time setting on the Selec-Trac t-case gives you much more control in the snow. It helps keep the rear end following the front end down the road, and that's exactly what you want.

If all I had was the Command-Trac case, I'd use Part-Time in the snow ONLY, and I'd keep it under 55.

An important thing to remember about 4wd in the snow is that while you may have more traction for acceleration than a 2wd car you still have the same number of brakes.

Four wheel drive doesn't help you stop any faster. Drive responsibly for the conditions you're in!

Fail to head this and you may meet :grim: and end up :dead:. And no one wants that.

Also, don't :5SHOTS: and :JEEPIN:. And don't play :BINGO: with :frankie:, he cheats.

I've driven for hours in Fulltime (4Hi?) at the posted speed limit (75 mph) for hours and hours.

THANK YOU!! too many people think 4wd or AWD is a savior in bad weather. but like you said, all it does is help you go faster, not stop or TURN any better. proper tires and driving skills is what makes it!! FWD cars with snow tires is great!! i wish more people would learn that actual snow tires ARE a good investment for their cars. not as much on a 4wd truck with good all terrains, but it's not myself i'm worried about, it's soccer mom in her van on worn out NO-Season (all season) tires!!!

I would safely bet that I can take a two wheel drive with proper tires and go on most any snow covered roads that people here in the Midwest and East think they need to be running in 4 WD with
Most times you don't need it :banghead:

(correct above) select trac in full time utilizes clutches or differential.

What do you really think 4hi is going to do for you on water? If your gonna hydroplane it gonna happen :banghead: As Tom said but in my phrasing If you can't go that fast in 2wd you don't need to go that fast in 4wd. This is where especially the idiots in big trucks get in trouble, they get going like crazy and as soon as they come up on an obstical or a turn in the road they are in the ditch. Ya just can't fix stupid.

Good case in point
Had to run to the Post Office right after I posted
seen two wrecks, first one Police had under control, 2nd one it just happened in front of me,
Got out to see what I could do,
In the rear a Dodge Ram 4 wheel drive
next up a Cherokee
Then an Avalance
all 4 wheels drives
They getting out the guy in the Dodge starts ranting about a *iss poor truck not worth anything can't even go anywhere, then says "I had it locked in 4 wheel drive", all others say the same thing, they thought since they had it locked into 4 wheel drive they were unstoppable ( well I guess they were :ROTFL: )
But snowy/icy roads etc common sense more than locking it in comes into play more times over
Also there was a Ford 4WD stopped then had 3 tire spin going on, I drove around them all in 2 wheel drive :banghead:

:5SHOTS: were u put that it dosent help turn better...........well i hate to break it to you but................your very WRONG! :ROTFL: :ROTFL: If u go around a corner in 2wd and its icey ur rear tires might kick out if ur power is less in the back and a little bit of power in the front YOUR REAR END WONT KICK OUT!.................SO 4WD WILL HELP GO AROUND CORNERS! :banghead: :banghead: but yes it wont help u stop any idiot should know that

PS: i hope i never go on a icey moutian pass when your around

Dont come to wyoming then u will get raped on the mountian roads here my half brothers dads thought the same thing as u had a suburban with great snow and ice tires on the pass from dubois to jackson hole and was just in 2wd and lost control going 45 and fliped his car and went into a 10 foot tall snow drift and died from to snow breaking through his windows and suffocating him :|

Two things I see wrong here...

1) Your saying that your back end won't slide in 4wd..................... Wrong!!!
2) The topic is "How fast is too fast under 4HI" not "Who's gonna be the first stupid redneck that gets someone kill
because of ignorant advice."

When giving advice to an unknown audiance it it very unwise to make statements like this. Some 17 yr old kid could read this and think it is actually true to the letter. Next thing you know he is flying around a "mountian pass" into a 4 wheel slide which is harder to control than a 2 wheel slide and over the corner he goes. You need to remember that no matter if you see then reprocussions of your advice or not there are people that will take it seriously. When giving advice about safety be smart either fully explain yourself or shut up.

Post subject:  Re: How fast is too fast under 4hi?

I can remember shortly after I bought my KJ asking the same question.

Everybody has already told you the answer, only drive as fast as you can stop safely. You'll find out real quick that you may be able to get up to 60 mph on a snow covered road in 4Hi but you won't stay on it for long.

If you expect to a lot of driving in the snow to lose the all season tires and get some decent snow tires. I drove my first winter with a brand new set and they handled like roller skates on butter. Now I run A/T's all year round but that's just me.

Jeep4life7 : the main thing is that 4wd does help thats all i was saying and yes u can slide if u have no common sense when driving so how bout u shut up :goink:
so dont go around being a a-hole to everone that leaves "unwise" advice as u would say. just be muture about it and say hey " your a little off here" and correct it so everyone can get along on this site and give good advice
