Hi all, it has been snowing lately so I've been using 4-hi every now and again. I'm noticing a noise coming from the passenger front kind of a light clunking. When I shift back to 2wd it doesn't shift immediately then after a minute there's a pretty violent clunk and then it's back in 2wd.

I kinda suspect the passenger cv shaft (had to replace torn boot in the summer), but I'm a bit worried about that clunk after shifting back to 2wd. Anyone have ideas?

Thanks!

Did you check front drive shaft? I had similar issue and would have put $1000 bet that it was front passenger CV. It turned out to be CV in front drive shaft.

Do you have part-time 4WD? As I understand it, with the part-time 4HI-LOC only here are no synchronizers or anything in the transfer case. I have all kinds of problems shifting between 4HI (LOC) and 2HI. I just consider it to be part of life with "part-time" (4HI-LOC only). I grind my transfer case gears regularly, but it's not because anything's worn out.

Word of wisdom: Don't ever, ever, ever, ever try to shift between 4HI and 2HI on-the-fly with part-time when driving uphill. Otherwise someone in a Toyota FJ is going to offer you a push.

The point is that I have heard some pretty major freaking "clunks" going between 4Hi and 2Hi, but it's not because anything is worn out.

Thanks for the answers. I don't really think it's the diveshaft (but you never know) because sound is from opposite side and I replaced my front ds with one that's single Cardon ujoints. Maybe clunk from 4hi to 2hi "normal" but sems awfully violent for normal ops.
