Post subject:  Speedometer Gone Tango Uniform

After last weekend's snowstorm 'wheeling, my speedo stopped working (needle on zero, odometer not advancing and RB1 showing no movement). About a day later, the speedo starts operating intermittently -- the needle swinging wildly sometimes or sitting on zero other times. I noticed that driving over bumps seems to affect this (indicating something is loose?). Anyway, does anyone know where the speed sensor is that feeds the speedo input? If I know where to inspect, I just might find something loose....

Just check to make sure all electrical connections on the tranny are secure. Also look for any cracks or abrasions in the wires going to those connections. I almost gurantee it is something simple.

I won't be able to look at my service manual till 500 pm tonite. (i'm at work) Put I can send you a PDF file on the speed sensing equipment.

The speed sensor is on the rear axle. Ive heard ppl say with lifts they can get messed up. Maybe some snow got on it and messed it up? Check it out, its on top of the pumpkin. Unplug it and make sure its clean and plug it back in. Check the wiring around it.

Wow! I had no clue that the speed sensor would be on rear diff. I guess I would have found that out tonite. :)

I don't think the lifts even have much effect...it is just a common problem regardless.

You might want to check the fluid in your rear diff. I have seen when water gets in the rear diff. it will effect the speedo that way. I did get to see the pics of you wheelin in the snow and that nice size puddle you were playing in... nice pics :D

Check the connection and wire at the top of the rear diff. (8.25). The e-brake cable rides very close to the wires for the speedo. Mine from using the e-brake ( a good habit everyone should do, it helps to adjust the rear brakes on the 2002 drum brakes) cut thru the speed wires and stopped the speedo dead. I rewired the connection, and didn't seal it well enough and the speedo, when wet outside, would wander.

MOPAR has a repair kit, its around $30.00. If I remember I will post the part number tomorrow.

Thanks all. Now I know exactly the things to look for when I'm under the vehicle tomorrow night. Al -- I appreciate you looking up the part # for the rebuild kit -- I have a feeling I'm going to need it.

Yay!

Topper,

This is a very important question to me:

Did your KJ run right with the Speedo not working?

Author:  Jeepin Al [ Mon Feb 20, 2006 6:01 pm ]
Post subject:  Mine did

Mine did run correctly after the speedo died. The RB1 seems not to work, and the cruse control didn't work, other than that everything else was fine. Even the tranny shifted ok.
