Yesterday i climbed this pretty crucial hill.. got caught in my tracks a couple times. As i tryed to get out though it seemed as if 1 wheel only was getting power!? This isnt the first time ive noticed this. Ive seen videos of other kjs in 4 wheel drive with maybe only 1 or 2 wheels spinning. Why is this i thought that if i was in full time i should get 25 percent of power to all 4 wheels

I was just reading up on it.. I think it might of stated I need to put the car in neutral before pulling the lever into 4wd.
If i where to come to a complete stop then put it into 4wd would it make a diffrence? (not using neutral)

This link should answer your questions. Basically, without lockers, all the power is going to go to the wheel with the least traction.

All KJs come standard with open diffs so power is transfered to the wheel with the least amount of traction. If you want to see the full effects of this. Jack the jeep up at all four corners with the wheels off the ground put it in 4 wheel drive and give it alittle gas. So if you want all four wheels to work as one lockers are a must and the only way you will accomplish true four wheel drive.

Ok well it looks like ima have to go buy lockers. How will this affect the street ride quality? Is it going to be awd basically? Will it be permanent 4wd?

If you don't want lockers to effect street handling, do a forum search for air lockers; you can switch those on and off from the driver's seat.

cool. good to know. With the normal lockers (non air lockers), all 4 wheels are constanly getting power? is turning difficault due to the differential not being open?

No with Automatic lockers the locker decides when too lock up not you, Turning may become difficult depending on the situation(I.E. snow,Mud etc) IMO the ARB is the best way to lock a Dana 30A, as some people have had issues with Auto lockers and breaking there housings.

The behaviour also depends on what gear the transfer case is set in. If you are in 4WH or 4WL (part time), then you will always be driving both axles, which means that on dirt, if you only have ONE tire loose traction( like one of the rears) and both fronts are still in contact with solid ground, you can pull yourself through. If you have a transfer case with "Full-time 4WD" (otherwise known as AWD, etc), and you're in that gear, if ANY wheel spins free (and assuming no input from ABS or traction control), then you're out of business.

You'll be surprised how far you can get simply by making sure the transfer case it in the right position and being careful about wheel placement.

Air lockers are the way to go yes exspensive but reliable are extremely strong. You with destroy your shafts before you even crack and ARB air locker. But there are alot of people running the Detriot true trac lockers in the front and rear. Alot of people do the front locker only because ussually it is the only set of tires still on the ground when offroading. But if you want true 4x4 then yes dual lockers are the way to got but just do your research on what you really need then to do and what you want to spend.

Until you get those lockers, you could try an old 'snowbelt' trick. If one of the rear wheels is spinning, slowly lift up a little on your emergency brake. It will fool the differential into thinking that both tires have traction, and send power to both wheels. It's NOT something you'd want to do on a regular basis, since it'll eventually burn up your emergency brakes. But, in an emergency..........
