Post subject:  RUSTY'S COIL LIFT QUESTIONS

Im lookin to get the Rusty's coil lift. Who has had it?? Any problems or praises?

Also, Is it true that the prelowered kjs are higher because they made smaller springs... So if I get a coil lift instead of a spacer lift on a lowered kj, then Im really getting an inch higher than I would with the spacer... right :?:

thanks for the input...

Right. The only bad thing Ive ever heard about the Rustys lift is the rear shocks do not fit right. Some people say they are fine? Idk. I would get the rancho rear shocks if it was me, they will flex more. You can order those instead of the rustys shocks when you order the kit.

we ( me and eddo from lost kj ) just installed this lift today. i will say it is super sweet, it gave me full 2.5 inches of lift, along with the goodyear mtr's im up close to 3.5 inches. the shocks do knock a little bit at low speeds but not any noise on the highway. ill post pics in a day or two..

thanks for the help today ed!! its really appreciated. next time you are down west chester way, let me know, ill take you to lunch or something..

Rusty DOES NOT stock the rancho shocks, and will give you a half hour speech about how his shocks are the right length and rannchos are not if you ask about it, I know be experience.

I've had mine on for little over a year now and over 25,000 miles. It has sagged a little, but works great. I would go with different rear shocks. I think I have blown one of mine. Follow my cardomain link below for pictures.

The story I got from Rusty's was that the washers (like 10 of them) provided and torqued to proper settings will work great. Didn't do it.

Just tell him to not include the shocks cause you have a set aleady and get a set of Rancho's.

jasonk it will probably settle .5 inch. Clevis can raise it back up.

All J has them or $60 each.

yeah, im gonna get a couple of extra dc spring isolators for the back end and do a little clevis lift up front to get it to set just right.

we tightened up the rear shocks, but they sure do knock going over speed bumps and such. maybe another washer for each side? ...

I have been looking at this lift along with the Frankenlift. I am beginning to think the Frankenlift is the cheaper way to go if I have to replace the Rusty rear shocks, pay to get the front strut assembled, buy spacers, and buy washers. I am very much a noob with this stuff. Maybe a shopping list side by side would help me.

465 Rusty's lift
+65 (shipping to san diegp)
-100 (his shocks out)
+120 (Rancho's from AllJ's)
=$550
Clevis Free
Lost West installed mine for me.
for net about 2"

775 Frankenlift
??? Shipping
??? Install
=
you get a true 2.5 to 3 in of lift.
Plus dealing with a great true supporter of the KJ.

If I had to do it again I would probably do the Frankenlift,
But Rusty's lift is treating me awesome.

Hope this helps you.(from a beginner myself.)

Rusty told me he'd take $50 off to not include the shocks.

Frankenlift's benefit is the struts are preassembled, so your savings with the rustys depends on what it costs you to get em assembled. The other upside of the frankenlift is that you stock suspension parts stay in tact. If you ever need to swap back out, you don't have to steal parts back from the lift. (Rusty's lift requires you to reuse some stock parts.)

Both are great lifts, Just depends how much you wanna spend for convenience.

Rusty's lift is a KIT. You don't have to buy anything else. Washers/spacers come with the kit. The shocks ARE OME, not a "Rusty's special" shock.

I did my lift with a coworker. Unfortunately the spring compressor didn't work and I had to run over to Pep Boys and they charged quite a bit to do the change out of the strut assembly. If the compressor had worked, no additional cost. The compressor was at a military Auto hobby shop.

If you get with some people in your regional club, you can get a lift party and have it done very easily and with no additional costs.

All lifts will sag over time especially when you add more weight to the KJ. Rusty's gives 2.5" of lift (I actually had more). I did pre and post measuring in four different locations around the KJ. No clevis lifting.

This picture shows everything you get. I forgot who's picture it is, but it is what I got (washer/spacers in the bags).

I have nothing but good things to say about my Rusty's coil lift. His rear shocks work great with the washers in there and they are the perfect length. (much more rear flex) If you have an impact wrench the spring compressor is really easy to use as long as you get the right one. If I had it to do over agaiin I would still get Rusty's over the frankenlift.

Rusty's shocks are not OME. He told me himself over the phone that he has them specially made by Monroe. That's not to say they are bad. It's just to correct the information. I have no personal experience with either kit yet.

I settled on the Frankenleift simply due to the fact that I am working with All J Products on some decal work. I was going to order the Rusty's kit before this work came along and do the extra coilover assembly myself.

BTW, I picked up a coil spring compressor set at Harbor Freight for $29.99 just in case I need it to get my rear springs out. Looks to be high quality enough for 2-3 uses.

The shocks are not OME, but the struts are. I just put one on the other day and it had OME part numbers on the struts. Partially covered up by his sticker. Nothing to complain about though, OME are excellent struts.

I stand corrected. I knew there was OME in the kit. I guess I rushed my answer before thinking which ones: struts-shocks.

I love my kit so far, I am going to change the rear shocks to something a little more stiff.

Not rustys related, but lift kit related,,,I'm STILL waiting on my RF-1 kit from RRO....coming on 4 weeks now....they just billed my credit card for it....so its GOTTA BE on its way....I was in California for two weeks hoping to see it here when I got back...nope...not yet.

I understand RRO is known for its backorder problems....but I guess that just means they're selling there stuff so fast they can't keep it in...which hopefully equals to their product being decent. Can't wait to try out the pre-runner shocks that come with it!

And.....I'm getting tired of looking at the Goodyear MTR's stacked in my garage that wont fit on to the Renny until I get my kit!
