Post subject:  Front Bump Stop Measurements Please

I have performed several searches but can't find the real info I am looking for. Can anyone tell me the distance between the front bumpstop and UCA contact point on a STOCK KJ please. I have lifted and have extended plates on the new UCAs to protect the UBJ zerk and help bump but I think they may now be to close together. I find myself hitting bumpstop WAY to much on large dips in the road where I wouldn't 2 weeks ago. I just want to confirm before I shave the bumper a bit.

Thanx all

Did you make your own bumpstops or ?
Also if you are stock height why did you change the stock ones out?
Confused at to what , when and why?
Got any photos/pictures

RRO Spacer lift, RRO UCAs w/ Extended Bump plates.

Latest development though is now I am not sure that it is the bump stops making contact. I rubbed some grease on the rubber stops and cleaned the contact points well. Hit the driveway lip at work this morning at some speed, had that bump stop hit sound and feel but no grease on the contact point from the rubber. :?

Well first problem is that RRO lift
Then some have had problems with the RRO UCAs as they do not fit as well as stock or JBAs
Did it just start with the addition of the lift and or UCAs ?
Did you install new front and rear shocks?
Little more back ground, dateline, miles etc would possibly help

"Well first problem is that RRO lift"

Pretty much expected that to be the first thing out of anyone's mouth as soon as I said what was on it.

And I can say that I have absolutely no problems with their parts or service.

No I have not replaced the front struts, they are still good.

I guess I'll just have to do some more grease marking and see what might be contacting.

I'll sorta apologize for anti-rro responses you've already received and a few more you'll probably get..

you've got to understand we've already had several members go through RRO lifts, and RRO UCA's.. in dealing with the UCA's in particular one or more of the people's UCA's weren't even the same length

thus the eyebrows that get raised in suspicion

helpful information would be:

are you running extended stock-replacement bumpstops like terraflex or something

if you extend the plates to protect the zerk, just roughly measure from the highest point of the uca nearest the zerk to the extension plates you put on and subtract roughly that much from your bump stops

i just notched V's in my terraflex bumpstops to provide clearance for the zerks, then swapped the zerks out for 90* zerks to make getting grease hoses to them easier

also if you torqued the UCA's while it was still in the air, back the bolts off and retorque them with it on the ground, itll both get the preload off the bushings and make sure your uca bolts are torqued properly

On a serious note though, if there's any helpful info except "RRO stuff sucks and that's your problem", I'd love it.

Don't mean to sound snippy or snotty or anything like that but I did my year or so of researching and reading and everything and honestly other than people's opinions, did not find anything wrong with the products offered by RRO (commence bashing of me).

The struts shouldn't be bottoming with the amount of road dip I'm talking about. The springs shouldn't be stacking either. UBJ is at a good angle. I did notice on the sway bar and LCA that they have opposing points that look dinged. I don't see how they would make contact with each other though as they are connected right near that area by the end links. Have not tested with grease whether or not there really is any contact there or not.

No, stock rubber stops.

I didn't extend the plates, they are bolt on "brackets" that came with the UCAs as pictured here. http://www.rocky-road.com/media/insane_arm_small.jpg

Nope, sat everything on the ground, jumped on it, bounced around on it etc. and then torqued. Not my first rodeo on this type of stuff LOL.

Good questions, now there's some brainstorming going on!

Was trying to help ya but.............
Stock bumpstops there is one problem
need extended
also your stock front shocks if you have over 35-40,000 miles are done, they are weak combine that with ANY read again ANY lift and they will not hold up like they should because they are WEAK and WORN out.
With again ANY type of lift you have to have a combination of good parts to work correctly
So weak shocks one problem
stock bumpstops another
and to not upset you further I will stop there :ROTFL:
geez try and help someone :banghead: :ROTFL:

ahh yeah, i've seen those guards.. they'll serve as extended bumpstops when used with the stock bumpstops

rub some chalk or something on the bumpstops and as gently as possible try to get it to make the noise

it sounds like from your description that you're feeling it jar as it hits, so im sorta assuming it's not more a noise that's bugging ya eg. swaybar etc

i personally add bumpstop for the amount of lift I add UNLESS i design the shock / coil spacing around it which is basically impossible to do with the KJ fronts due to being forced to use stock length shocks, to keep the coils from stacking / rapidly degrading it needs bumpstops and that ignores addition of top spacers / clevis etc

if you can work the front suspension using a jack, you may be getting UCA-COIL contact

you've had it aligned yeah?

Gotcha on the weak struts, have read that the OEs are real junk. Not discounting them but don't think that's the main problem I am experiencing right now is all. I think I have more than enough bumpstop to keep from bottoming them, that's why I want to know what a stock bumper to UCA measurement is though.

Like I said, rubbed some black moly grease on the rubber stops and no transfer to the extender plates when I "hit" this morning on the way into work.

Yeah, had allignment done and all came out in spec.

No UCA - Spring contact either, verified that.

Ever heard of the sway bar and LCA hitting??

Post subject:  Re: Front Bump Stop Measurements Please

sway bar hitting the LCA is impossible unless something is bent or the sway bar links are installed upside down ( which some have been known to do) :ROTFL:

Weak shocks will cause problems due to them letting it hit too hard and not providing the dampening effect they should

i dunno who put their swaybar links on upside down / backwards

LOL, OK.... That's what I was thinking.

I'll have to really check up on spring stacking/shock bottoming then.

"Their" secret is safe with me

what does your springs look like currently? Also did you do any "before" measurements to see where you were sitting at. If your springs were already pretty sagged then with the spacer type lift it would compound the problem, so then you have springs that are already weak along with weak shocks...

I lost my notes of the hub center to fender lip numbers but have pics of the ground to fender lip measurements on the computer at home.

I put RRO's spacer lift on mine at about 25K miles. The driver side strut (shock) blew out as I was letting it down off the jack. I had planned on just replacing the shocks and running their UCA's but, that didn't happen as, over 4 years later, I'm still waiting for those UCA's or my money back from Rocky Road.

Yep. It's the front struts. Never noticed how floaty they were until replacing the rear shocks... So looks like some monroe complete struts are in my near future.
