I've noticed lately in 4 wheel drive (Full Time - NOT Part Time) on my 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD, that when turning sharp corners, the wheels feel very choppy. I didn't think this would happen in 4 wheel drive full time - only in part time or 4 wheel low. thoughts? |

Why are you running 4 wheel drive now? |

simple, I have 4 wheel part time, 4 wheel full time, and 4 wheel low. I usually run in 4 wheel full time when it's raining. jeep does say you can run in full time, any time you want. I went off roading about a month ago and needed 4 wheel low for most of the time, a lot of climbing. I only had wheel binding a couple of times in 4 wheel low. But the question is specifically for running in 4 wheel full time turning sharp corners...I didn't think it would "hop"...I know my CRV is all wheel drive and doesn't do this, ever... |

Comparing a CRV and a KJ is well laughable two different systems almost I guess to me its funny to think you need to use it when its raining , yes you can but.... heck I hardly ever use 4 wheel drive in the winter time, good tires and driver But yes you will have some binding when turning if turned tight or hard enough Your CRV is more of a slippery system lets everything slip instead of being locked in |

The 242 is a finiky shifter and unless the planets are aligned and a bunch of other mumbo jumbo it can stick in part time 4wd when you shifted into full time 4wd.I would 1st check your tire pressures as that is the most common issue concerning shifting in the 242,and your tirers can not be more then 3/32"-4/32" tread depth difference as that will also cause shifting issues with the 242. Oh and the CRV is FWD with rear wheel assist,so it's almost always in FWD until the ABS sensor detect the front wheels going faster then the rear and engage the rear wheels. |

When I am in Full Time, my steering feels heavy, maybe a TAD binding on full lock, dry pavement. However, if I am stuck in Part Time (like tjkj said finicky shifting) I usually find out RIGHT away while turning. The wheels bind and skip at about half lock. So sounds like you might be stuck in Part TIme. Usually to get it out, I keep my hand gently on the shifter as I am driving, and keep gassing, then coasting until I FEEL the shifter get SUCKED back in by the springs. |

Mine has gotten stuck in part-time mode a couple times as mentioned. Checked my air-pressures and shifted it a couple of times until no more binding. |

i still stop and back up out of habit even though I don't need to, the unloading of the driveline between neut and rev and back will pretty much ensure you're out |

I bought a low mileage liberty used from a jeep dealership last week and i am having an issues with the 4wd system. I tried it out on the test drive and it seemed to lock up fine, at least gauging byhow the feel in the steering wheel changed. Yesterday i had it engaged and made a sharp, low speed left turn andi heard a very loud bang from under the car, and based on the steering wheel feel, i think disengaged from 4wd. I re engaged, cut a left u turn, and bang, same thing. Im trying to get an idea of what the issue could be before i go back to the dealership tomorrow. It has a full powertrain warranty for 30 days after sale date, but im guessing the dealership is on the hook for the bill...so the more i know the better, as if it requires something expensive, like a transfer case, they may try to snow me and say all it needed was 'grease on the muffler bearings' or some other nonsense. Tire pressures are all even and of equal age. Thanks! Posts: 3390 | Register |

Was it in 4WD full time or part time? If it's in part time and you attempt to make a turn on dry pavement because the wheels want to move at different speeds you'll get drivetrain binding and wheel hopping, which could be that loud bang you heard. This is not good for the drive train or the transfer case. Also, if you do have 4WD Full Time (Auto) I've heard that the KJ's sometimes get stuck in part time. |

As i have been reading more it sounds like it may have got stuck in part time...so a- how do i know it has/make sure it goes to full time, because it was lit up in the dash and b- whats the likely hood i broke something? Thanks |

I'd say you didn't break anything, but if 4wd stops working then you will know! For me, the only way I know FOR SURE that I am out of 4wd is how tight I can turn without binding on pavement. However, I usually feel the lever being "sucked in" after shifting to 2wd (I leave my hand on the shifter for this reason) and then I know it's good to go |
