Since the lift for the Libby is happening much sooner than expected,
I've started looking into improving my off road traction.

Just curious as to who has what for lockers, posi, etc.

I'll definitely be locking up the rear, and possibly the front also if the budget allows.
Manual, automatic, cable, electric...... I need information on everything.

I've always liked the ARB air lockers myself, but in no way can I afford the $900+
per axle for them.

I like the Detroit Locker for the rear, but it's still $650ish.

I'm looking for opinions on the Aussie locker, as well as the PowerTrax,
and even the TrueTrac, and OX Locker.

I've got 3.73 gears at the moment, but will likely go to 4.10 when the larger tires go on.
This means the locker will happen when the gear change happens...... why tear everything apart twice.

Who has what for lockers?
What to you like / dislike about it?
If you had it to do over, would you get something different??

Anything and everything is open for discussion.

When my KJ was still IFS I ran the DTT up front and ARB out back,in my personal opinion besides front and rear ARB's you could not come up with a better combo for the KJ.

I would go DTT up front a Detroit out back for the best bang for the buck. Those lunch box lockers are not very good and everyone that has ditched a lunchbox for a full case locker couldn't believe the difference and why they waited so long or did not do a full carrier locker in the 1st place.

Have ran an Aussie last 50,000m or so. Was noisy till I switched to 85-140 dino gear oil. Tire pressures need to be kept close also. Very good bang for the buck, easy install was a big plus too.

i ran an aussie in the rear for 20k miles... then just got sick of it's road manors and BANG and POP noises all the time.. felt like my rear end was going to be laying on the street after every 90 degree corner.

now running a detroit locker in the rear... it's 100x better then the aussie. well worth the cost.. if you buy the detroit you WILL NOT be disappointed in the performance on or off road.

with that being said.. the aussie did offer outstanding offroad traction... and was cheap ($300 shipped) and i was able to install it myself so that was cheap. but with lockers... you get what you pay for.

another thing to look at is if your a stick or auto... sticks are a lot more... ah... stressful on lockers (especially lunch box lockers like the aussie).

also... if you buy a cheap locker... expect to take it out and have to buy another 'good' locker a year or so down the road.

Save your money for awhile, when you have enough start with the Detroit in the back. You will be about $1,100.00 installed. You might find out that you don't need a locker in the front, all depends on how hard you use it off road. For what it is worth, I also have a 2006 LJ Rubicon....I wish it had a Detroit in the rear.

I have an Eaton E Locker in the front of the Libby. For me works it really well and I do some fairly serious off roading (see "took a walk in the garden, rock garden that is" post). ARB, Eaton E Locker, DTT, you can't miss with any of them.

Just don't go the "cheap" route, because if you do that is what you will get.

Brad,
DTT in front and Detroit in rear, and 4.10's. Do it all in one shot!!

It is what I am running in my KJ, and love it when I wheel it!!

x2.

i didnt do the DTT in front... but my traction control mimics a locker for the front :)

Looks like this is the overwhelming "winner"..... and likely the route I'll take.

As much as I like the ARB (always wanted at least one in my 4X4), I can in
no way justify $2000 just for lockers.

What's the best place to get gear sets to insure I get the right stuff???

Why does no one seem to prefer a Detroit TruTrac in the rear? (It is supposed to be much less violent than a Detroit Locker for on-road use.)

x2.. after having my aussie there was no way i could go to a LSD in the rear... especially being used to a 'locked' rear end it would be annoying not knowing when i had 2 wheels cranking or 1 spinning still. i wanted to be positive if one of my back wheels was hang'in 10 the other one was cranking to pull me through

Front & Rear TruTrac's

They work great - I'm 900 highway miles from Colorado and 1200 from Moab - true lockers didn't make sense (unless you go ARB)

They make perfect sense and work if your talking about full carrier replacement auto lockers like the Detroit Locker.I would have F/R Detroits but live in a mountainous area with snow/ice so ARB's went in.If I still lived in eastern South Dakota where it's flat I would be rockin Detroits F/R,great lockers.

I did love the DTT up front in my KJ(ARB rear),was great in the winter, just shift into 4 high and it was a "point and shoot" type of deal on ice and deep snow.Sadly though DTT's are only for 32" and smaller tires.

Why is that? I was considering DTT and 4.56 gears with my 265/75-16.

Your fine then. The DTT is only rated up to a 32" tire, anything bigger then that and no warranty.

All Except the Tallest Gear for the 30A is 4.10, Weren't DTT's behind many 30A failures a year or so back? With people rolling or sliding back and getting on the gas to go forward?

Only 1 D30A failure that I know of that had a DTT(or any other traction aid),all the others were open diffs.

Mine would be DTT in the rear diff with 4.56 gears. Then I can use anything in my invisible front diff. :-)r
