I need a easily attached and removed crossbar system for a 05 with factory rack to haul one kayak.http://www.backcountry.com/old-town-loon-160t-kayak-with-rudder-tandem

Iv hauled this kayak on different cars with it upside down on a air mattress and tied front and back :ROTFL: The ropes try to bend the kayak in half since its plastic which loosen the ropes. Its ok for a quick cruise down to the river but not on the interstate. I hope to mount or lock the kayak by the spray skirt coaming lip instead of on cradles which would deform the kayak. Does something like this exist and would the factory rack be strong enough to hold the kayak without ropes from front and back?

Thanks

I have 3 kayaks. None over 10.5 I can haul 2 on my home
Made cross bars. I have seen a lot of different ideas on how to make your own.
I have seen a lot of very nice manufactured ones. All of which were beyond my finaical means.
Even plastic kayaks should not be destorted that much. When I bought my 10.5 the salesman gave me different tie downs because my ratchet straps chinched to tight.
Merry Christmas and a great 2012 kayak season

Merry Christmas to you as well.

Its to bad the factory rack doesn't extend over the front seats. Im afraid my 16' kayak maybe to long to be supported by it. I dont mind building one, but I doubt I could make a clean professional looking one without spending more money and time. I wont use muffler clamps etc.

Iv been searching for a rack to replace the factory rack built to extend over the entire roof. Not having much luck though since the sunroof was a option.

I have two cross bars that came with the Jeep when I bought it.
I know what you mean about wishing the rack extends over the front doors, I have carried both my kayaks (10 ft) several times with no problem, though I wish I had some kind of contour on the top of the bars; and constantly carry my 24' extension ladder (which is about 13 ft long when retracted) for work. Even though the cross bars are only 4 ft apart it seems to work fine, I have logged several thousand miles even at Hwy speeds with no problem (Knock on wood..).
I try to let as much as possible to hang back as to not catch too much wind, but for your 16 ft kayak I would add a tie down to the front bumper and another one to the rear, you should be fine.....

Do you have a hitch reciever? Maybe there is something here for you. Look for the roof extender or "goal post" hitch accesseries. Also check out the water sport carrier section. Just be careful of the max load limit for your roof. Probably around 100lbs or so.

I've carried assorted combinations of kayaks and canoes on Thule square cross bars. With the longer boats (13.5ft) I use front and rear ties. The smaller kayaks are placed in "J" carriers and are very secure. I still use front and rear ties for piece of mind. When going solo, I have the capability of folding my front passenger seat flat and putting the 9.5' kayak inside. Easiest of all options I guess.

Good luck and keep us posted as to what you find that works.

Rebar, sorry, I just looked at your signature. "Stock" KJ probably means no hitch reciever, huh? Sorry. Just trying to throw out options. That's a good looking tandem kayak though! Looks like a lot of fun. Plenty of room to fish out of that one for sure. I can't wait for the warm weather to return so I can get back out on some of the lakes around here. Keep us posted!

Thought I'd post up a pair of photos of what type of overhang a 13' canoe has on my KK. I understand Rebar is concerned about the weight of the 16' kayak deforming and bending the hull with so small a distance between roof cross rails. A "goal post" mount into the reciever box on a hitch would probably alleviate the concern, but I don't know if the "stock" status on the signature line also means they don't have a hitch. I hope they are able to get this one worked out.

The first two photos are a few years old. That's my son with his kayak. I think he was 10 in this photo. He's 13 now and loves the quiet solitude time on the water like his old man. :ROTFL:
My daughter is now old enough and began paddling this year. Her smaller sized kayak (9.5') gets "sandwiched" between my son's and mine with a bow/stern tie off. It works just fine.

Looks like your kayaks fit quite well. I don't have a receiver hitch yet. But when I get one it will be attached to a motorcycle trailer. Only option I see now is this. http://www.rocky-road.com/kjrails.html.

Trailer! :banghead: I'm not that smart :ROTFL: That would be a heck of a lot easier to load a long boat on than the roof. Come to think of it, I believe Cherrie mentioned an idea for a trailer awhile back for her boats. Another option for heavy duty roof rails is

http://www.rocklizardfabrications.com/Liberty_gecko_accessories.htm

I read a LOT of positives about this company's stuff. I don't have any of thier products (or Rocky Road's) though so can't give any first hand reviews either way. Maybe throw out a post to the general community about who has what type of aftermarket rails and how they like them.

I'll quit buggin' you now. LOL Have a great new year! Woo Hoo!

Thanks but my motorcycle trailer is a flat bed. Does anyone make something in stainless or aluminum?
