I brought my Libby to a stealership after I noticed a LOUD banging sound coming from the front end when I went back into 2-hi. I just got word back from the mechanic saying that it could be that there are only 2 new tires and the comp is reading the tire rotation wrong.... I dunno, but I'm thinking that it is something else.... :(

noise from the front end or transfer case during shifting in and out of 4hi, 4lo 2hi what ever is not always something to be alarmed about. lots of vairiables there, type of road conditions speed when shifting, was the KJ moving when lever was manipulated?

As you drove down the street imediately after did you notice any debris in the road in the rear view mirror?

If not you might be okay. Just kidding.

Not always something to be worried about.

I think that you can put your Jeep up on a hydraulic lift and run it for a while in drive and 4 hi to unbind the T-case.

I agree that it doesn't always mean something bad happened/is happening. I had an old samurai that would do that quite frequently when coming out of 4lo into 4hi. Mind you the samurai had enough millage on it to go around the world three times... Sometimes I get a clunk in my 03 libby sport when trying to shift out of 4hi after it's been parked on a hill. Just takes a slight move forward to get everything to line up again and have the selector shifter to play nice.

Have a look in your manual. Don't shift when you're stopped and in drive (by pressing the brake) and then going into neutral because the shaft in the transmission will still rotate slightly (whops I did that yesterday trying to get into 4LO and I had some teeth churn a bit). Use park or let the vehicle move while in drive (don't go into 4LO when going any speed faster than walking pace!!).

I have shifted plenty of times between 2WD and 4WD while doing 40-60kph (25-40 mph) in drive with no problems. Just accelerate gently and back off the throttle two times, to make sure the gears are all aligned. Works for me every time.

When shifting while parked make sure you use R for a few meters and D for a few meters to match the gears up.

well they put two new freakin tires on it and everything is smooth as butter :). I'm glad they did at least that cuz they have had my libby longer than i have because they screwed up my steering column replacing a clock spring(?). thank god it was just in time for the big storm

Mine makes noise often when switching from 4wd to 2 wheel drive i try to shift in and out at about 5mph and it seems to be okay. but the biggest problem i have ever had was when i drove for 3 months without my front drive shaft and when i put it back it i was popping for a few days i guess it just had to line back up but i dont think its that big of a deal. i also always put it in neutral right after i shift and sometimes reverse just to ensure it disengages.
