Post subject:  Humming in Full time?

Just noticed yesterday when I had it in 4 full time, there was a buzzing/humming sound when accelerating, mainly between 30 and 40 MPH. No noise in 2WD. Fluids in transfer case and diff are pretty fresh (less than 10k on both, done at dealer) No noise when coasting either.
Any thoughts? Or is this normal?

The two jeeps we have with select-trac do this. I always figured it was the front gears humming since they now have torque on them. Our xj is much more pronounced than my kj..

I guess. I'm trying to remember if my WJ did it. It doesn't bother me, as long as its harmless. Thanks

My XJ has the select trac and it does it too. Kind of a humming or whirring sound.

My Liberty does the same, it's the part-time transfer case (NV231 i think? can't recall off the top of my head.)

Anyways, my Ford Ranger did the same thing. I just figured as noted above, you get that rumble since there's torque applied to the front driveline. I wouldn't worry about it unless you're getting an occasional popping, or feel some binding going on.

Exactly...

Other than that, it drives great! No harm no foul!

Same here, and I believe it may also be caused by the repartition of torque at both ends, putting an added strain on the transfer case/transmission combo as well... No real adverse effect, mostly annoying, and can be somehow remediate with switching off of the OD, especially with my TCM tune locking from 3rd to 5th... Keeping the RPM higher alleviates the issue, in my experience.
