...so my wife takes it to the shop for said replacement then tells me there's a rearend grind as well. (?)
So I call the shop and tell them to fix the rearend first. I'll know what that entails when the techs get back on Monday.
Anticipating a big rearend rebuild bill, I'm needing to know from you guys what tools are necessary for me to replace a CV joint, where do I get the parts and doesn't $688 sound quite expensive?!

Seems it's always something w/ this KJ! BTW, it's an 05 LTD that my wife and daughter drive.

Hey hey, welcome to LOST.
That price isn't completely outrageous.
If you have a place (and time) to work on your own Jeep, definitely do it yourself.
It really isn't all that hard to do.

Check out this post of mine from a while back.

Enjoy.

Welcome to LOST
replacing the CV is pretty easy to do as mentioned above. If you have basic tools thats all you need really.
If you post up where you live someone near by maybe able to help or walk you through it.
Good luck

Howdy Welcome to LOST

The dealership is charging you ~$400 for a new part and ~$100/hour to install
so overall 688 isn't too bad.

However if you can do it yourself - it'll probably take a little longer, plan for a Saturday - you can get a New part from Mopar Parts America - probably ~$300 - or you can get a NAPA rebuilt for ~$150.

(do not get the Advance/PepBoys/AutoZone "new" CV's made in China - they're too short and will die quickly)

It's about that much without getting the core charge back. Make sure you turn your old ones in!

Well then should be noted that CV is 50-60 bucks and 100-120 or so for the core charge.

Actually Tom - I figured you were getting the volume discount :)

I haven't had to get one for the KJ yet - so I just Googled it.

Thanks for the help and the welcome guys!

Right now I'm waiting on a phone call from the shop to see what the damage is on the rearend :dizzy: ...then I'll decide on the CV.

Thanx again!

I think I counted the other day I have 4 right side and two left side ones piled up out there in the corner of the garage. All are good to run, even have one that Al Handy rebuilt ( the original JeepinByAl) back in the day

Pickup the liberty tomorrow and pay a <$700 bill to have 4 bearings replaced in the rearends ring and pinion assembly.

Perhaps at 180,000 miles I should expect some of this.

CV next.

Merry Christmas to me! :banghead:
