...what? An XJ? a KK? a TJ? a JK? Maybe a poll is better for this but I'm tossing it out there. Need something to build for long range camping/wheeling trips and I've decided the KJ isn't right for me for that purpose.

What do you all think?

Honestly... will never sell my KJ,
but if I had to choose something pretty awesome,
it might have to be the 70's Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40

Always kinda liked them.

I had a 76 LandCruiser with a Chevy 350. A BEAST offroad, Almost a death trap on road. 33 inch tires would almost change lanes on its own. The top weihed a Ton and I miss it every day.
Love that AstroVan, never seen one with that roof.

With a 502.......

(although an FJ40 isn't a bad option)

502, nah. Too big and heavy. However the Astro was designed to fit an SBC and it is a popular swap. Fairly plug and play.

I just bought a 97 Land Cruiser not long ago. Factory lockers and plenty of aftermarket support. It has twice the room as the KJ. Only down fall is the 10-13 MPG it gets. I bought to do a diesel swap in the summer. I still have my CRD which I won't be parting with.

what kind of terrain/country will you be wheeling in? i know here in PA we have a lot of tight wooded trails that 4 door JK's and even some cherokee's have a hard time getting through.

also how many people will be with you on your trips? if only 2 a TJ or JK brute would be AWESOME. if 3 or 4 a XJ would probably the cheapest/most able offroad to build.

if you want something really reliable and mostly on road driving and the 'occasional' offroad/camping trip. a toyota FJ cruiser wouldnt be 'terrible'. i've driven a few and they are very nice. however they are wide and they all seem to get their roof bashed in on trees right above the back window. the aftermarket support is there though.

Man. They named this one correctly. Little large for eastern woods but the four wheeler takes care of that.

If you have the money, I’d buy a new 4 door JK. If money was somewhat tight, I’d buy an XJ. When it comes to expedition style travel, cargo space is your friend. Plus, there’s a fair share of aftermarket support for the XJ and JKU.

I'm building my KJ and XJ for camping, expedition travel, back-country exploring, hunting, and towing off-road trailers. Here are my build threads:

Ditto.
I'm still in love w/ my old XJ that my son bought from me. I Will build another one. For the money the XJ is the best Jeep in my opinion. You can buy them fairly cheap and mods and such are very easy to come by on the used market as others upgrade theirs. Lots of room inside and on the roof for a large rack or tent. And they wheel like mountain goats! :JEEPIN:

If I started over I would go with an XJ,

BUT I do like your KJ so why not get a trailer for extended trips? I would guess it would be cheaper in the long run to keep your vehicle, but if you are itching to build a new toy, than go for it :)

Hey all, thanks for the great input and advice. I am leaning toward an XJ. The new JK is out, I just spent my last $45,000!!! hahahaha!!!

The motivation for this is my KJ keeps having issues with bushings going bad, fourth time now on the rear tri-link and I am tired of fixing it. More than that I want a Jeep for overlanding with a storage/drawer/cooking/fridge set up inside and the flatness of the XJ is better suited for that and it will support an RTT with the right roof rack. Also, in general I know there are way more companies making (usually cheaper) upgrade parts for the XJ than the KJ (or KK) so a late model XJ sounds like the best option.

Depending on what I can get for my KJ I may be able to find a decent XJ and have some $$ right away to put into it. I don't WANT to sell my KJ but I can't afford another Jeep.

Now for more XJ research and to see what my KJ is worth...
