Ordered NAPA reman CV shaft today for passenger side.
Found local mechanic that agreed to let me do at his shop this saturday with his tools that way I can get what I need and be able to do myself next time. I am on at least my third shaft due to boot wearing on itself from lift. This one tore a little months ago and my wife has been using since due to her comute being local.
Any suggestions or tips?
I am most concerned with getting it back together. It was tough when I assisted with original lift install.
Can anyone explain where to attach strap when pulling it all back.
Thanks to all as always. 02 gas with Frankenlift.
Also just installed Firestone Deatination A/Ts 235 75 16's on Grand Cherokee rims (bought slightly used) and they fit with no issues

IF you need to use the rachet straps to pull it in, have the clevis on the bottom of the shock
next attach one hook on each leg of the clevis down low and the other ends to either the skid plate or other side LCA and just pull it in as needed
Pretty easy really just remove everything to get it out of the way, pull the CV out and replace
I had to do one on mine again the other day, price we pay to be up in the air some  Guess it wasn't too bad though, second one in 165,000 miles and lifted 145,000
which side, ... right?

Yes the right side (passenger). I never know if your supposed to reference from inside looking out or outside looking in.
When it only costs the price of part then yes its worth it, when you have to pay someone it hurts more.
For some reason mine seem to wear thu pretty quickly. Havent had a CV joint issue, just the boot. we've actually been driving this one for a while with boot totally torn. With winter muck about to start I figured I better pull the trigger now. Did your boot fail? Did it wear thru?
I think Ive made the decision to let my wife drive it most of the time to keep the milage on boot as low as we can.
For my work I have to go on Utility Power lines and will miss having the Liberty to bang around. Our 87 Volvo wagon just dosen't handle the off road like the jeep. Its not unheard of for me to do 600 to 800 miles in a day. She does about 10. Work will have to rent me a 4x4 when needed. I don't get my .55 cents a mile with the rental though.
Any chance you have a pic of staps in action? Have you done a steering rack yet?
63 for axle
123 core
Thanks Again

New axle in.
Do you guys disconnect sway bar links when doing? We did and boy what a $80 delay that was. Bolt sheered off while we were loosening it and the only way we could get it out was to cut the round bushung end of sway bar link to get it out. Bushings were pretty bashed up anyway but a new one was 80 bucks and a trip to the dealer. Did I mention how great air tools are and that I wish I had my own?
Next issue was that the intermediate shaft was pulling out with CV shaft. Made it hard to get out from behind clevis.
Should the shaft held in with anything? Seprated them on bench and reinstalled.
Reassembled everything and my last concern is that the last fold in boot on innerCV is folded over the clamp that hold it on.
I am thinking of taking off factory clamp and pulling the boot out a little and then using a hose clamp to retighten on shaft.
Any thoughts on that?
Thanks for the offer audiboy, I had your number with me just in case.

You didn't remove the clevis? I always do just to make it easier no use fighting it all the way
Yes the intermediate shaft almost always comes out with the CV, were the threads good on it yet? Did you use anti-seize on the threads ?

I didn't really have to, the inner boot was completly cut in two and the CV came apart so it came out in two shorter pieces.
Itermediate shaft was in good shape, It was replaced with my first CV axel many years ago. It was wasted back then. Yes we put some sort of antiseize on splines.
My biggest worry is how the new boot is folded over clamp that hols it to shaft.
Any thoughts on that

BTT,
Any thoughts on removing factory clamp and pulling boot out and tightening back up with hose clamp?
Don't know how to post a pick or I would.

I have done a couple where only thing I had to do was flatten the clamp some to provide enough clearance for it not to rub
Installing a hose type clamp will only make it worse with the big screw on the side

I was thinking if I took of factory clamp and then pulled the boot out/down about 1/2" it would not be riding on itself.
Right now the last fold in the boot is over the clamp itself, If I extended the boot it would not have that problem anymore.
trying to figure out how to post a pic

Anyone ever pulled down on cv boot end to reduce folding over on clamp?

I have had axle on now since Sat.
Looked at where boot was folded over smaller clamp on inner boot. Was very concerned about the boot wearing on clamp so last night I removed factory clamp and extended boot down on axle to relieve boot over clamp issue. I used a hose clamp to resecure boot. Hopefully it holds and I will get some milage out of this boot.

The boot has too much air in it thus pushing the boot over the clamp. Simply use a small flat blade screw driver and wedge it between the cv and the boot/clamp. Be VERY careful not to punch a hole in the boot. Release the air and call it good.

If you leave it like that it will wear a hole in the boot. More so if you have a lift.
