Post subject:  Clunk when cold

As the temperatures dip back down to the freezing mark, my 2002 KJ's nemesis returns. A clunk from the rear, most noticeable as suspension returns to normal ride height, rather than moves away from it. Ambient temperatures above 5 degrees (Celcius, a boot 40 F), no clunk.

2002 Liberty Limited.

Door fitment is good. Suspension seems tight (some movement in the link that mounts to the top of the rear diff, but so little it's too close to call), right around 120,000 Km / 75000 Miles (has been persistant since purchase @ 80,000 / 50000 Miles). No lift (2 small kids), no nonsense.

Only thing I can think of may be U joint... but mine feels good.

Any other thoughts or experiences?

You mentioned u-joints, most will feel tight to the touch but when bad most times they will be rusted out and hardly moving at all. Drive for a ways and then lay your hand close to the rear joint, if bad it will be real hot

Now are you sure its from the rear? A lot of issues with the front sway bar bushings when cold all you need to do is spray some silicone spray on them
rear tri link ball joint can give a clunk when bad as well, hard to check in a way but that maybe an issue as well
