| Post subject: | Tools Needed for a Gear Swap |
Hello i am getting ready to swap to 4.10s here in a few weeks have all the gears and master install kits for the front and rear from just differentials they include For the Front •Pinion Bearings/Races •Carrier Bearings/Races •Pinion Seal •Pinion Nut •Crush Sleeve •Pinion Depth Shims •Carrier Side Shims •Stub Axle Seals •Stub Axle Bearings •Ring Gear Bolts •Silicone •Loctite •Marking Compound w/ Brush And for the Rear •Pinion Bearings/Races •Carrier Bearings/Races •Pinion Nut •Pinion Seal •Crush Sleeve •Pinion Depth Shims •Ring Gear Bolts •Gasket •Loctite •Marking Compound with Brush Now I know i will need a case spreader for the front and a special adjustment wrench for the rear are there any other specialty tools that i will need or that will just make this easier. Such as set-up bearings(dummy Bearings) and a seal puller. Also any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated. |

I'd post a link to a great write up of gear installs from pirate but there site is down right now. You will need a press(with attachments for bearings),dail indicator, torque wrenches(high quality) in 1/4",3/8",1/2" drive, and may need 3/4" drive one if the 1/2" one does not go high enough for the piniuon nut.You also will need a good micrometer,an oven to heat the ring gear for easy install on carrier, and yes setup bearing are invaluable. |

I know there are set-up bearings out there for the rear but i can't seem to find any for the dana 30a. Also could i put the bearings in a dead blow hammer and a proper bearing tools or is the press a must. Also is the oven just to make it easier or a must also? |

The carrier bearings and 1 pinion bearing are pressed on.A dead blow's not going to do anything for removing them and installing those bearing via bead blow will take forever and damage the bearings. You make setup bearings using the current bearings you already have installed in the diff unless you already made a set from another gear install. You grind just a little of the inside of the inner race so you can slide the bearings on/off easily(can not have any play though) when setting gear pattern which may require you to remove/install shims many times. The oven is to heat the ring gear to about 250 degrees to expand it some to make installing it on the carrier easier since it's a zero clearance fit. Granted they are doing a D60 but the same applies to the D30A,almost all applies to the 8.25 besides no shimes used on the carrier bearings. http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/Gear_Setup/ |

Humm well that is good to know that i dont have to spend and extra sixty bucks on set-up bearings from someplace else. And if it is just 250 degrees then i can use the oven in my house. As for pressing the bearings in and out one of the guys i work with teaches at the local technical college in the automotive department. And i know they have lockers upon lockers of snap on tools. But i didn't see a press but I will definitely check with him tomorrow to see if they have one I know if they don't i have a buddy with a machine shop. |

One more ? is the differential bearing preload wrench a must or are there other tools i could possibly use to get the job done? |
