Post subject:  Clutch is going out...

So last night I stalled 3 times on the way home from school and started to notice something funny. The clutch pedal felt "soft" until the last 1.5" that I pushed it in. I then noticed it did not engage until that point as well. So I was wondering if this could just be a low fluid issue or is the clutch really going out?

...did I mention that this is in my Ford Ranger

So for now I'm driving the Liberty :SOMBRERO:

Check your fluid level. It could very well be that you have a leak. Are you saying the clutch did not engage for the last little bit, or disengage?

The fingers could also be bad on your clutch plate.
Check the clutch reservoir, then see if bleeding it does the trick. It works kinda like drum brakes where the cylinder hydraulically pushes the clutch lever at the transmission. You may need to crawl under and have someone press the pedal. You should see the pin coming out. If you don't it is the master cylinder, if it is moving in and out with its full travel, then it is the clutch plate not disengaging.

i had that problem on my ranger a while back, turned out to be low on brake fluid (in the clutch of course)

I am going to try the brake fluid first hopefully that's the issue!

Will leaking brake fluid leave stains on the street like oil does?

Brake fluid is basically silicone with additives, it will make the area slippery if it is concrete, but it usually soaks right into asphalt. Silicone is pretty much inert, unlike anti-freeze and oil.

I just had this happen in my libby. Turned out the clutch plate was toast and the hydraulic system for the clutch was shot. good luck

So I added brake fluid to the clutch reservoir...This was not the issue! The guys at the auto parts store said it might be the slave cylinder. Anyone had any experience with this?

(remember, it's for my Ranger)

Common problem, slave cylinder leaking. You have to pull the trans to replace it so might as well put a new clutch in also while you have it all apart.Royal b**** to bleed also.

Ok. I have heard that before. So if I replace the clutch does that include the slave cylinder? Is the slave cylinder inside of the clutch?

Ok this has been very helpful.

I'm trying to save my money. So I'm not replacing it till it completely goes out.

Today on the way to school I had to JAM it into first and second. Coming home from school 3 hours later...no issues. :D
