I found this android app: https://market.android.com/details?id=org.prowl.torque
I can connect via bluetooth to the ECU with a device from scantool.net. Is this good?

It's supposed to work great, Google it on other forums.

Works OK on my 2002. These apps are constantly being upgraded. The only negative would be the small screen on a phone. It also works on a laptop.

Well, then this is much better than buying a scanner.

Do you plug in only when you want to check codes or can you just leave in place?

The screen is really too small to use constantly. You also have issues with your phone's screen going dark or cutting out if you have the power settings adjusted to save battery. Once they go to tablet it will be a whole new story.

The app that I have has customizable screens, so you can have a "dashboard" that gives you exactly what you want.

I haven't really delved into it, but it looks promising. If you want a screen that sits in your lap, you might want a scanner.

What about using a cable instead of this expensive bluetooth connector to connect with the phone?

EBay,or Amazon, Bluetooth is only $30.
I hope that's not expensive, lol.

Well, that price is probably for the chinese ones that the developer of Torque recommends not to use. The one from scantools.net is $200. A simple cable isn't enough?

I'm using a cable I got from Jegs. Works fine for me.

I've been using torque pro app with the $20 elm 327 Bluetooth adapter from ebay for awhile now and think its hands down the best app EVER!

This seems like a really cool application for monitoring your engine and system. Does anyone know if this would work on yamaha motorcycle parts to check their status after use? Reliability is pretty important in jeep, but also in a motorcycle! Let me know how I would connect these! Thanks.

The Chinese one works perfectly fine......and its $20 with free shipping and is at your door in 12 days. I've referred people to the same elm327 Bluetooth and they love their cheap Chinese OBDII adapter as well.

I have the Torque app for Android on my phone and use the Chinese OBD Blue Tooth dongle as well. Works great. I was able to diagnose a crankshaft sensor problem and have it fixed. You can also turn off the check engine light as well. Well worth the $25 I spent for the app and the dongle.

I got mine from a vendor that goes by batteryplant on eBay and I was impressed by email response time (5 minutes!) And I received it pretty quick for having to come from China.I love this thing and was able to help a buddy who was buying a car. As we test drove the car we could see realtime readings but the some of the emission readings read incomplete but it had no check engine code on....so as we drove I had my phone scan for codes. And whaddya know...two codes an o2 code and egr code.so when we stopped I had him shut off car and restart it but the check engine light wasn't coming on at all not even at start up when it comes on for a second and goes out. So we told the guy selling it what we found and he was like......uh.....oh.....yeah...uhh...I forgot about that. So my buddy got the SUV for $300 bucks cheaper because you can't even get it echecked until the light is fixed, the light was taken out by someone so he replaced it and replaced o2 sensor and had bad seal on egr and was fine.

Well, that's awesome. How long it took the delivery from China? I ll buy the same as you did.
