So our first snow of the season here in OKC, and I was getting a little bogged down.
Scenario...
It's 30 degrees, snowing.
I'm not horribly stuck, just can't get thru the intersection.
I had the jeep warmed up ~20 mins of driving.
When I switch into 4 wd, makes an awful grinding noise.
I switched out quickly.
Then I switched back in to see if it was a fluke.
It wasn't and I switched back again to 2 wd.

I did a fluid swap about 15K ago with proper fluids, all the way to the top.
No warning lights or anything came on.
What's goin on here?

Thanks.

not sure in all honesty.
call me whatever you want, but not sure how to check.
I have been having trouble with tire wear too... on the front only.

It's how you learn. Check the rubber boot, On both ends of the front drive shaft. Mine were gone, just had rusty bearings left. Made some horrible noise when 4wd was engaged.

What trans case do you have? If its the 242 then that sounds fairly normal. The 242 will not just 'pop' into 4wd. I usually have to be rolling for mine to pop right in. You're just grinding gears trying to shift while stopped. If your front tires are not worn the same as the rear then that's cause issues also.

Sounds like your front driveshaft. I replaced mine this past summer.

Don't forget to check tire pressure.

242's the shift level pushes a spring that pushes a gear - any difference front to rear and it won't engage, tire pressure/tire wear ect....

231/241 are more direct connections.
