Well i have been lurking here for a few years, but finally figured i would make a post to get some of my unanswered questions answered. I have been in the 4x4 scene for years and years but never Libbys. I have inherited my wifes '02 sport and kind of went about the mild build backwards. I had some some tires leftover from one of my previous 4x4 builds and decided it was cheaper to use them than to by new tires, so.....

I have one set of Maxxis Mudders 265/75R16 a Liberty with 120k on the clock. I have been reading as much as I can but haven't quite figured out how to sort through the tons of posts using the search function. So here goes...

I just put in a Rusty's 2.5" lift (PITA by the way, not near as easy as solid axle lifts) I have my stock wheels and will have my 265s mounted tomorrow. What kind of issues will I have to deal with right off the bat? I expect rubbing of course, but will it be undrivable? I mostly use the jeep for my commuter (10mi per day). I thought about Rough Country spacers, but can't find a whole lot of info on here about them. I am in no way going to dump a ton of money into the truck for a re-gear, so the power lag I will deal with.

Are there any decent pictures or posts that show where the rubbing will take place (front/rear). I am no stranger to a sawzall, but would like to leave as much of the fender intact as I can.

I appreciate the help, sorry for the long post, but figured I would get it all out at once. Flame on if need be, be keep in mind that I am not trying to necessarily do things to make it a reliable trail truck to beat on, but to use what leftover stuff I have. Thanks

Your going to have massive rubbing, major cutting will be needed just to be able to turn.If mounting on OE rims you will most likely have some good rubbing on the swaybar and upper control arm balljoint. You will also loose about 1/3-1/2 your current gas mileage if you ahve any hills aorund as OD will be totally useless and your trans will hunt for the right gear often which will build up to much heat in the trans.

Awesome, i guess either go big or go home. On all my other builds I always wanted a bigger tire after I put new ones on the truck, I guess this way i jumped ahead of the game. So I am guessing wheel spacers will be needed, will there be that much difference between 1.25" and 1.5". I know that in the past there has always been a fine line with backspacing, too little and you rub inside, and too much and you rub outside.

Yep rubbing on the pinch weld on the back and bumper/fog light area in the front more than likely
Plus the Rustys lift, well you should of read through more posts on here
And even on level ground no way to use OD anymore until 75 or so
trans will get hotter due to always hunting for gears

and also you can take a saw to it but just know what you are cutting away is actually part of the frame/unibody

Be a lot farther ahead to sell the tires and buy ones that will work better like 245-75s way less issues

Now if you had a good lift then not many problems I never cut anything on mine of course have the ARB up front but no cutting of the fenderwells

so are we talking major rubbing just banging around town back and forth to work or on trail? I was thinking of some wheel spacers to reduce rubbing on turning, would that be a safe bet?

More than likely curbs/speed bumps etc
But not knowing how high you are sitting hard to say
measure from middle of the wheel to bottom of flare

will do, i guess i will find out tomorrow anyway after i get it back from the tire place. I told them it would be a tight fit, but said there would be a sawzall in the passenger floorboard in case they needed it :D

tight fit
understatement without 4 inches of lift or more
but

Just keep cutting 'till they fit. Then post pictures.

Please fit extra bumpstops (like 3 hockeypucks) on the rear axle. Otherwise the tire will eat your rear doors fender flares and get messed up by the bodywork hiding underneath.

Now on the front, do not cut the pinch weld. Flatten it with a bfh.

Yeah and that YJ was totaled. Replaced by a TJ. Some people leave out important facts. *shakes head* :-) lol

Anyways, I ran a 265/76/16 mud tire on my Liberty when I first lifted it. Only for two weeks though till my 245/75/16 tires came in. I could have driven around on donut tires but it looked stupid and was unsafe. While driving on those 265's, the Jeep lost a lot power and rubbed majorly until I trimmed the lip of the front bumper. I did have the jeep up to interstate speeds with the 265s. It is not impossible to run 265s but not recommended. Most stick to a 245.

Up to interstate speeds
OOOO I would never go that fast with that size tire

well, i don't do interstates and haven't had the jeep up over 50mph in months. It doesn't matter at this point because i am waiting on my wheel spacers. my local tire shop guy was mounting them on the rims and said that they were rubbing the upper control arm when he torqued them on the hub. I am not so sure i believe him, but oh well the spacers were ordered before i took it to him anyway. This jeep is my mule anyway it is 10 yrs old and i am not going to spend $4k on lifts regears tires, axles..... on a truck that isnt worth $4k. Like i said in my first post, i am using leftovers from other trucks to begin with. I may cut some bump stop extensions for the rear on the lathe if i get bored, but if it doesn't rub too much i probably won't bother. I will post some pics when i am done with the tires and spacers though for any one who is interested.

Spend $4000
I don't have half that in mine :ROTFL:
Interstate speeds was a joke, had mine well over 95 the other day coming back home
Bumpstops are needed front and rear to keep the tires from hitting the flares
Teraflex front bumpstops and hockey pucks for the rear, with your setup more than likely will need 3 thats what I have to run now
Heres what happens with 265-75-16s and only two inches of bumpstops ( 8 inch wide wheel but 5 inches of backspacing )

Yeah I know... :seuss:
Seems I remember visiting someone in Ohio that ran the same size tire and squealed tires going through a 4 way stop, on the way to a hardware store. Just can't think of the name :?
