| Post subject: | Lockers? |
I am considering putting locking differentials in my KJ and I am wondering if it is the right thing to do. There is nothing wrong with the Detroit TruTrack LSD that I have in the rear now and the front is a stock open diff. There is a lot of other things I want to do to the Jeep as well to make it more reliable when going off road as well as additional stuff I want to get to make it more useable while camping like gas cans, water cans, a set of MaxTrax, etc. etc. I am wondering, those of you who have lockers, how often do you use them and in what type of terrain? I am not really a rock crawler though I do get into some fairly tough trails while out camping or with my LOST SoCal friends. I am more interested in overlanding than "wheelin" or mud bogs. Do you think my money is better spent elsewhere? Considering how expensive it will be to put locking diffs in, I'm going to be doing a lot of research on forums but I thought I'd post here as well to get the opinions of those who care to give theirs. What do you think? Thanks for looking and hopefully responding to my post |

And so the locker debate will start. I have a Detroit locker in the rear and an Eaton E locker in the front of my Liberty. Knowing what I now know, if I were to do it again I would just do the Detroit in the rear as the few times I have needed the front it was only because I was lazy and didn't want to "work" the obstacle. Rear locker, no matter which one you go with (not lunch box lockers, sorry to those that have them) will change the entire off road personality of your Libby. The other thing you can do is leave the DTT in the back and put an E locker or ARB in the front...Kelly is running that set up with an ARB on her Cherokee. You might ask her how she likes it. |

Front and rear ARB air lockers. It's nice being open/open for everyday driving. No clunks and the only sound you hear is when you engage it. (Or if it were to spring a leak.) And when done right you have the added bonus that you also get on board air for your tires/tubes, air mattresses, etc. |

if you dont already have 4.10 gears that would be much more beneficial as far as everyday driving then a locker/lockers. and to set up 4.10 gears you have to go through the same process as installing lockers... so it's the time to do both. 4.10's would work great for your camping especially if you ever want to pull an offroad trailer/offroad camper. plus you'll get better gas milage when on or offroad. when your installing the 4.10's i'd suggest ARB air lockers front and rear... for a less expensive combination a detroit locker in the rear and a detroit tru trac in the front would be a very very good combination. however it sounds like the wheeling you do a detroit tru trac limited slip in the rear should be plenty (if you dont know the trick to lock up the DTT by using your brake you should google it.. makes it into a full locker). If your in a spot that you need the front locker just pull your winch. My money would be spent finding a used front diff from a 4cyl liberty with 4.10's... then buying gears and a rebuild kit for the rear. keep the DTT. |
