I have two annoying problems with my '02 Liberty I'm having a hard time figuring out.

#1: No problem starting or accelerating, but when I go from "slow" to "stop" the Jeep makes a conscious decision to drop the engine down to idle speed... and will drop a couple hundred RPM too slow, resulting in momentary rough idle before it picks back up to normal idle speed. I've actually had it die on me a couple times... the harder the stop, the rougher the idle and greater chance of the engine dying. This problem is not present when the A/C is running.

My fear is this involves the computer and a trip to the stealership... started happening shortly after my last tune up.

#2: A bizarre sound, something halfway between "Sproing!" and a loud vibrating noise like pressure is being released... ok, it sounds almost like the Jeep is farting out a slinky! It happens irregularly, comes from under the hood, and bugs the hell out of me. Today I got out and hit the door lock on my keychain... and just after the horn beeped, I got the noise. Very odd.

Any suggestions?

I have no ideas or suggestions but would just love to thank you for making me laugh! "sounds almost like the Jeep is farting out a slinky!"
:-)r

Good luck.

It sounds like a vacuum leak of some sort.

I have the same "farting" noise on my 02. It's very irregular and I'm not able to reproduce it. I have no idea where to even start to look.

For #1, have you tried disconnecting the battery for an hour, then reconnecting it? Sometimes the computer gets too smart for its own good and needs to have it's brains cleared out. (I hope that's not too technical for anyone. ;) )

Kinda sounds like the same line I give my clients, when they're having troubles in 'Windows'.

sounds like a vacume leak to me too. If it started after the tune up I would check the vacume lines around the spark plugs and the air filter hose where it connects to the engines. is the check engine light on?

I never thought of a vacuum leak, but it seems it might explain both problems!

I will stick my noggin under the hood and start looking around the plugs and power brake mechanism... and I didn't know there would be a vacuum line around the air filter hose... I will double check there.

The check engine light is not on. If I can't find a vacuum leak... and my mechanic can't... I'll try clearing the Jeep's brain out and see if that helps!

Thanks all for the answers, I 'preciate it!
